Ms. Hairy Woodpecker (left) feeding her youngster. Excuse the harsh
mid day light this was a snapshot of opportunity but cute enough to
post I thought.

Great catch, Ron. I rarely see any of our woodpeckers standing/horizontal.

Thanks, as a rule neither do I but they find the top of the bird feeder post a handy place to feed the young. They're actually quite awkward looking when they do, they tend to waddle like a penguin due to thier shot legs.

This photo is a bit confusing to me.
If the adult were feeding the young, then why wouldn't the young be inside the cavity nest? If the young has already fledged, then why isn't it foraging on its own?

Many speices take care of the young for a period after they leave the nest. I've seen bluejays robins and woodpeckers behave this way. Kinda like having a 34 year old child living at home I guess<g>.

I have photos of adult woodpeckers feeding the young at the cavity nest hole, but never out in the open like your shot. For your next challenge, shoot them again with perfect light! Maybe you could put up a canopy over the feeding area.
