I'm giving a few lectures soon (one on general PJ work, the other more specifically about concert photography) and needed to create a bit of a title page for the slide show, so I did the good old "throw the photo passes on the floor and photograph it". I got around 60% of them in the shot, so it's a fairly good representation.

What a grand idea! I have a couple of hundred very high class laminated ones (Access Pass & Design) that I plan to someday match up with prints of my work and frame for sale and they are just sitting in ziploc's at the moment ... if I get a chance I'll give this a go.

Man that's a nice idea. only if i had kept all of mine. I shot about 200 shows last years..and already shot about 30 this year, including 1 tonight, and 3 this coming week. I'm going to start keepin them.

Ah! sticking on the fridge is such a good idea!

AMS, I think I did meet you that night. I remember thinking how I'd love to hit the road with The Boss, that would be a sweet assignment! If you ever need a few weeks off and need a sub...
I wish I would have been in the room when Bruce came out and played with The Gaslight Anthem, probably one of my favorite new bands.

What a braggart! LOL. I still haven't picked up that 200mm f/2.0.

I'm still a bit road weary after the past 2 1/2 years. Good thing he's laying low for a bit so I can, as well.

I'll warn you, Dwight, it's an addictive lens. I rarely pull out the 70-200 anymore. Although I have a feeling the MkII 70-200 will change that. Rent it once at your own risk.

Nice image!
That type of shot was used by Canadian photojournalists Lynn Ball and Doug Ball for their book "Life on a Press Pass."
Heres a link to the book's cover: http://www.siegelproductions.ca/bookaddicts/images/lifeonapresspass.jpg
Canadians may recognize these brothers for a couple of their iconic (Canadian) images, including the one of Pierre Trudeau doing a pirouette behind the Queen (http://iconicphotos.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/trudeaus-pirouette/).

I am holding my current budget at a second 1DMIV, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS MKII (has this been announced?) and 24-70mm f/2.8L IS MK II (which I hope is coming.)

And amazingly they all landed with pretty much the same orientation.

The 24-70 is rumored to be coming...
Dan: I know Doug's son Gordie pretty well, though I have only met Doug once. My father in law worked at The Gazette under Doug for quite some time.
Neil: Throw was used loosely...

Tim, I've pre-ordered a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM but there is still no word on the 24-70mm or the 1DsMIV so I guess I'll just keep saving my sheckles.

I had the same idea a couple months ago. I primarily focus on sports, but plan on expanding into concerts in the near future.

You're so lucky you get so much more interesting and colourful passes on your side of the pond. most of the ones i end up with here in the UK are just boring single coloured promoters ones. its a rare treat to get one thats designed for the band/their tour.

I've put my passes in a box in storage, but this is a photo from over a year ago. Granted, my photo pass collection is so minuscule...
Still nice to have though. :D

I was shooting about 2 or 3 nights a week and I think I did 5 festivals for a total of 305 bands I think. My busiest non-festival night was 6 bands in 3 venues. Great Scott -> Brighton Music Hall -> Great Scott -> Brighton Music Hall -> The Paradise-> Great Scott! I made the most of my funemployment last year. ;)

Think I mentioned this before but after 2 songs at the Elton John concert I was escorted to the car park and had my photo pass politely removed. I was told I could request it in writing if I wanted it back. I'm not a collector of anything so I declined. I don't know why people give me old coins and stuff for presents, because I just throw them in the garbage.
Does anyone still collect postage stamps -- and invite their friends around for an evening's showing? What an adrenaline rush! :)

I'm not a collector of stuff either but I figured I'd save passes for my kids in case they wanted them. I throw out my tickets and was shocked to learn that 95% of the 135 people who replied to a question on my Facebook page save theirs - http://www.facebook.com/questions/10150405134918213/?qa_ref=pt

Having said that, my dad used to keep the old football programmes when he'd take me to games in the 60s. I've still got them in the garage, and some of those guys living and deceased are immortals today. I've also got some theatre programmes of shows that my parents took me to in the 50s. And in the absolute trivia department in 1991 I mixed audio for a once famous band here called The Cockroaches, who were going through their death throes. My niece insisted that I get their autographs, and when one of them declined I insisted. I just can't tell you what jerks they were-- they reformed and became The Wiggles.
