I recently got into digital photography with the g1. I shoot for my local newspaper and they went digital. I couldnt afford a D30 at the time but now I may be getting ready to step up to a more pro model. My question is, does anyone know if canon has any new pro model digital interchangeable lens cameras coming out soon. I shot all of my print stuff with canon equipment so I can use all of my lens and accessories so I need to stay with canon. Should I take the plunge now or do I need to wait.

From a G1 - the D30 is a much more pro model.
At 2500.00 - a good buy.
There will ALWAYS be another better model about to be released. If you want to wait for the next best one, you'll always be waiting.
There is talk of a better Canon 35mm to be released this winter. But it will likely be about double the price of the D30. If you don't mind spending 5-6k on a body, wait. If you'd rather spend 2,500.00. Get the D30 now.

I've also heard that the new D 30 type camera will be using a CCD sensor instead of a CMOS one. I suppose it is up for debate with sensor type is better, but that might be something to think about.

I must ask is it really necessary to revive a 7 year old thread?

Guess not, but it's fun to see what we payed when digital became serious.

What are you, internet police? Is it necessary to nit-pick?
I thnk it's cool to see a "blast from the past" every so often. Helps keep things in perspectve sometimes.

Very cool, kinda like a time machine. Was 2001 that long ago? Also note the date. We were living in a different world 9/5/01.
The point of bringing up an old thread was for us to take a moment to compare where we were and we are going.

:D....well....yes it is ! I just bought one a couple months ago (nov, 2008 ). I didn't give $2500 though. I found a nice clean example for......$119 at keh dot com !!
It's fun to play with, still grabs great images, and I've already loaned it out to three different folks who are "thinking about getting into digital photography". It's perfect as a loaner camera for folks to learn on.
Thanks for reviving the old thread.

Look at the start date of the thread, 2001. Good price in that year. Things have moved on a lot.

I think the more telling thing is that the original serious question got two replies and MDJAKs makeshift history lesson gets 14 :D

For me personally, it brings home the point that these fine "old" cameras are such wonderful bargains in the used market. Say what you want about this "old tech"....the truth of the matter is you can produce some stunning images with them. As I posted above, I just bought one for $120. Also just bought a 1DS for under $1500. The 1Ds was $8000 when new. I couldn't be happier !
