Was there during the first Mass of Pope Benedict. Our travel plans just coincided with the event. It was really something to being there.

Not the Sistine Chapel. It's St. Peter's Basilica and that is Michaelangelo's Dome.
OUr travel plans somehow fell into the history books during JP II's passing and installation of Pope Benedict.

that must have been a wonderful one off experience .
after I posted I was sitting out in the garden and realised it would not have been the chapel I mentioned.
but was too lazy to go correct it
knew if I went to the computer at all, I'd miss the sunshine .
it does not hang around too long at times
we visited the Baslica ourselves last August, staying in Rome on the way to son's wedding In Sicily.

Glad you all liked my hometown :) Somehow, when you live here, you'll end up not realizing completely what we have available all the time. I suppose its the same for every big/historical city troughout the world, though.

My wife and I enjoyed Roma alot... more so than Paris (believe it or not). We stayed at Trastevere and enjoyed the local lifestyle. despite what people said about Rome being an unsafe place at night, we didn't detect any trouble at all. We spent alot of time walking at night and felt safe. Maybe the Polizia/Calibieri (what's the diff?!) totting sub-machine guns had something to do with it. ;)

Here's a pic of JP II's tomb. When we arrived at the Vatican, the lineup to the Pope's crypt was fairly short and we were able to visit it easily.

I apologise for the fuzzy pick as the Vatican guards were hurrying us. Don't want to mess with those guys I tell ya!
