OK as per Tim, i did the focus test using a couple charts.

1&2 are 2 different charts and i focused on the "square alignment line" on the first one (maybe wrong?)

all shots are at 70MM (where i see the problem) except 4&5. the range from 100-200MM is excellent (of course) and this test is not to check for sharpness as this copy is razor sharp (nearly cuts my eyeballs:lol: ), but rather to inquire with you who can help as to whether i should have Canon calibrate it even further.
i'd like to see the lens focusing spot on at 70mm like it does at 200, but i would hate to have them readjust and goof up the long end just to get the wide end perfect.
any suggestions and i'll do it thx

4&5 are zoomed out to 80 and 100mm (100 is where it seems better)

11 is the shot of a flower bush in the yard, the right flower head was the target, the left is just slighty behind the target (highest 2 heads)

I would say that there is a problem with focusing at the shorter end of your zoom.

I have the same lens and focus problem at the shorter end also. Initially the lens would back focus at the shorter end but sent it to Canon and now it front focuses at the shorter end. Focus is dead on at the longer lengths.

Gee, do i smell or something?
did i do this test poorly?
it does look like i need to send the lens to Canon, but does anyone know the Phone number for Irvine,Ca repair where i can actually speak to a Tech?

thing is, this lens is so sharp from 100-200mm, (and at 70, just a few inches behind) i'd hate to have them mess it up.
should i just stop the lens down when shooting at 70mm?

summerwind4 hadn't you replaced your original lens already. This is your second copy correct??? I have my 70-200 F4L finally but haven't been able to test it due to my 300D being repaired for a faulty hot shoe. I can't wait to get it back to put this lens through it paceses...

yes it is the second copy. the thing is, the first copy was not focusing at any range of the zoom consistently. it would lock and then bleep one more time and either be on or off at the long end, and never anywhere near useable at the wide end. even at it's best, the first copy was just not near as sharp as this copy.
perhaps i'm being to anal and should just avoid shooting in the 70-90mm range altogether.
it's useable, but not as sharp as it should or could be.
if Canon can't confirm that they can make a slight adjustment, then i'll just live with it.

you are not being anal..For $500+ dollars that the lens cost you would expect for the lens to be able to focus from 70-200 sharp. If this was a $200-$300 maybe you could let it slide but for $500 Canon should back up their stuff. Like I said I can't wait to test mine and I hope I don't have any problems with mine.

No, don't accept it if you think it is not user problem.

Have Canon replaced or fixed it. You should ask for what you paid.
