hey... nice shots!

you've really caught the moment in a lot of these...

do you mind me asking what iso/exposure settings you're using? these shots look a lot sharper than what i've been able to achieve... also are these strobed?

Hey Syph, thanks.

I can see why one would think they're strobed- the lights were super bright in two of the corners (and ridiculously dark in the other two)- but no, I don't use any flash or strobes for combat sports.

I didn't shoot anything consistently for this particular event- my iso varied from 1000-3200, and I was shooting in AV mode (the first time I haven't shot a fight event in Manual in over 2 years) so the actual shutter speeds varied wildly.

ah ok... thats cool i tried Av once and it wasn't working out for me it would keep giving me either too long of shutters or if i got a light in the frame it would mess it up as well... though i can only go up to 1600 so thats prob tough...

also i was trying a lot at 2.8 but sometimes couldn't get both fighters in full focus so tried inching up to 3.5ish...

what city are you shooting out of? (if you don't mind me asking)

I started off with the XTi 3 years ago and used to shoot in AV all the time. When I moved up to the 40D I pretty much only stuck to shooting in M. I've now moved up to the 7D a few weeks ago, and normally I wouldn't even have considered shooting in AV, but these conditions were too inconsistent to shoot in Manual, so I treated it like I would shooting music. Not perfect, but it worked out alright.

I'm in Minneapolis. This however was an international event- USA vs. Ireland.

Have you tried out the auto ISO feature of the 7D while shooting manual? I've heard it's improved a lot since its original introduction in the older bodies.

Nice shots, the harsh light works well for it. Good angles and perspectives, as always.

Thanks guys.

No, I haven't. To be honest I've never used this feature in any of my cameras.

I find the kicks very easy to time, and they almost never look as cool as the punches landing. That said, there were 2 KO/TKO's that night, and they were both caused by the "boxing" portion of the action.

Great shots as usual. You just might have me convinced to try shooting with a prime a few rounds next month when I shoot MMA again.

Just speaking on focal length, there's two schools of thought on that:

Those against it dislike how "limiting" a fixed focal length is.

Those that appreciate primes for all their goodness will tell you it forces you to be more creative, since you have to fill that frame with something.

I don't know if it's right for you style-wise, but if you're shooting in one of the dungeons I often shoot in, unless you like shooting at iso 12,800, it's a nice option to have.

From what I can tell your dungeons seem to be much better lit than the onces I shoot in. I only have the nifty fifty so I'm thinking about renting something for next month. I'm not sure the nifty will focus as quick as I might need in some cases. What do you use on the 7D? 35 and 85?

Are you sure?

It depends what I'm shooting- I might shoot with a 35, a 17-50, or a 70-200, but as far as primes go, I have a 30 and a 35.

lol yeah that's pretty bad I'll have to make sure I post up some from the next show I do. It's typically lit with a single tungsten bulb over the center of the cage. I love it though...

I probably just stick to the 24-70 then. I just wish I could get better speeds without under exposing or pushing the ISO too much.
