This is a great sentimental moment between mother/child. They really stand out from the background. I think there is some detail lost in the shadows. Here is my feeble attempt re-touching.

Here is the workflow in case you're interested.

1. Duplicate layer
2. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels
3. Adjust levels to taste.
4. In the layer mask, hide the background to the original level. When I adjusted levels, the background blew out. I wanted to bring this down to the original.
5. Add contrast to taste.

If you would rather me take this down, I'll be happy to.

yeah.. asy version looks a lil better..

i didnt notice how dark the skin tones was until the comparison..

i think this photo would be perfect for one of those vintage look kind of shots..
