View Full Version : National League Champs Photo Day (Phillies 2010)

Today was photo day for the Phillies, 6am setup time, 7am start time.

Lens seems to be front focusing which made it not so good of a day, least got keepers of everyone and nobody had all their shots screwed. Mark III with 24-105 f/4. 2 strobe/umbrella powered by battery packs. To my left in this lineup of photographers was Tom DiPace, who is a great photographer and one of my favorites for years; and to my right was Tomasso DeRosa who is again a great photographer though just getting introduced to his work.

Not sure how the exposure is being on a laptop, and the III exposure (histogram) kinda blows. Guessing a bit over.

Before anyone asks the watermark is obtrusive as possible for good reason!

#1 - Charlie was first of the day, the sun had not risen yet. Coaches are the easiest - 2 quick poses and done.

#2 - Good thing about these days is seeing the guys you covered "back when". Kyle could have taken a scholarship and been a star quarterback, he chose baseball and got to cover him for a few years when starting his pro career in the low minors.

#3 - Thinking of things for these guys to do can be difficult, and personally have no need for the hold the bat out, follow through, etc. shots. Though probably should (never know), just didn't do them today.

#4 - This one is a little oof as the focus hit the bill, but shows the reason I was trying to use a low DOF (the background nice and blurry)

#5 - Sky was cloudy but knew I was going to do this shot with him either way.

#6 - Chase has always been good with me, and always nice to see these guys after a good amount of years remember the good ol' days in the minors. Shot Chase when he first signed professionally, literally about a minute after he put on his first pro uniform (Batavia Muckdogs) so we could get it in the card set.

#7 - Exposure looks weird on this laptop...but I liked how this looked. Ry has one of the best smiles in baseball, which he did for the other shots.

#8 - Ideas to have these guy do poses runs out quick, apparently something over my shoulder is interesting....is to me, I told him to look that way.

Exposures look good Mike.
They look over here on the laptop, and on the III have to shoot under so they're right...confusing.

Mike, I'm stealing pose 3 and 5 if I get a chance to do this for HS Baseball.

I kind thought 3 and 5 were a little PG'ish. (Inside joke between me and Mike)

PG school of photography, you know you want to attend - if only it didn't fill up so fast!

#5 kind of reminds of some of Jesse Soll's shots of Stepehn Strasburg.

Looking good, MJ.

Chase may have had a few beers the night before the shoot. He's got some red eyes.

I've noticed that every time I've shot him...super human eyes!

Thanks...now to try more stuff tomorrow and see what else can be done.

Mike, I always wondered on these photo days....Do the players go from photog to photog like an assembly line? Great poses and shots.

Phillies fan here. Live 20 mins from stadium in Jersey. They are so fun to watch. There were some real lean years before the last 4-5. Fun to watch them progress.

Excellent shots.

No Yankees today, oh well...Tigers Saturday, Blue Jays Monday.

Yup, they go station to station until complete. Some were inside with backdrops and three of us were outside.

Phillies have been re-building for awhile and have a lot of homegrown talent. Mets fan all the way here, but definitely rooting for the Phillies secondary having shot in their system for so many years.

It's a street light or something on back there that didn't need to be (the actually turned on the stadium lights for some reason as well, and seemed to be after the sun came up). If for a print or anything would do the same but since it's editorial it's a no-no.

exposure looks perfect to me. Nicely lit, bright, standout, sharp shots. No surprise though from a consummate professional such as yourself.

Any behind the scenes shots of your lighting setup? Am sure the pre sunrise shots needed lighting. How about the others? Diffusion panels over the athletes?

Thanks Mark...it was nice and cloudy so the lighting was perfect and nothing needed. Even Yankees photo day with the sun out it just took some changing every so bit to move with the sun (did not shoot that, just there).

I do have a setup photo of Tom DiPace shooting but not mine (if you don't know his sports portraits check them out, he's one reason I wanted to get into photography and who I got to shoot with this day and was with at Yankees day). Great to watch him work. Will post it later because finishing uploading for a client today and need to get up in 5 hours to do Tigers photo day.

Thanks Will, wish the other photo days went as well but they did not - learning experience none the less.

How did you get to be a part of the Phillies photo day? I would give anything to be able to shoot them like that
