Hey guys, I've been sitting on these photos for a while but I'm really glad to finally share them with you. I think everything came together pretty well on these (car/location/post work) and I'm really pleased with the results - although moving forward I still know I can do better. I love Hakosukas so it was a great pleasure to shoot this car and I think my own affection for the vehicle shows in the images. Anyway let me know what you guys think and make sure to have a look at my blog (http://seanklingelhoefer.blogspot.com/2010/02/false-motion-anti-rig-shot.html)for the full build up of the motion shot!

I wish you shot most of these using the sun to backlight. The harsh shadow in these really take away from the pictures. other wise it's an amazing car, and nicely strobed.

Just read your blog on the pp. Why shoot with the sun in front of you? if you had the sun behind you wouldn't that have saved you a buncha time on putting in the shadow? am i missing something?

Love the lighting, love the location, love the car...

Wasn't this shoot featured in SS, or IT? Looks familiar.

If you shoot with the sun behind you, that makes it your main light source...and its one that you can't control.

To Nike SB'd, nice shots as always...ssing the sun as a backlight works out great for these IMO, and good use of strobes to show off the awesome bodylines. There's a guy here in San Diego with a 4-door Hakosuka in the same color and style.

I'm too much of a novice to comment on your photographs, but the subject matter... good lord is that a beautiful car.

It really comes down to personal preference but there are a number of things I like about shooting into the sun

-as mentioned it easily allows you to control your light in the shadow side of the car, although the gear I use is more than powerful enough to overpower the sun and thus that had nothing to do with my reasoning for shooting into the sun on this shoot.

-I like sun flares up in the sky. It's really hard to shoot directly into the sun and blend it without MASSIVE flares everywhere - you probably didn't even notice there weren't any flares (that's the idea) but any experienced photographer would pick that up right away. When done right I find it quite pleasing seeing a blown sun smoothly fade into a legible sky.

-Backlight creates more detail in the ground - when you're shooting a car there's more to the image than just the car. For me the car is almost less important than the mood of the environment. I really like the mood that shadows coming towards the camera create.

-long, detailed shadows. Again there is more to composition than just "where do I place the car?" The majority of auto photographers disregard shadows as they are just concerned with showing off the car. The shadow, when properly incorporated, can add a lot of balance to a frame - it can create tension, S curves, diagonals or anything else you want them to - you just have to imagine it and position them accordingly.

Bottom line is shooting into the sun creates a more dynamic image. It's a lot harder to do than shooting with the sun at your back, but it's also a lot more rewarding. Once you master the "car snapshot" you quickly find yourself getting bored of following the rules.

Love the lighting, love the location, love the car...

Yes the car was in the March issue in which I also shot the Evo on the cover.

Good ones. The light on the body makes it look good, but the shadows on #s 3 & 4 look way too sharp & unnatural to me.

That is one awesome car you managed to capture. The last shot is awesome, love the styling of the car. If I saw these shots in a magazine when the car first came out I'd be drooling.
