I have often seen comparisons between the 24-70 f.28L and the Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 28-70.
How about any comparisons between the EF-S 17-85mm verses these third party lenses?
After all, these are closer in price than the 24-70mm L.
Anyone?

Right, but the EF-S 17-85 does not really compare to the EF 24-70/2.8.
So if you look at a comparison of another lens with the 24-70/2.8 and it is doing well, it will most likely offer better image quality than the 17-85 IS.
Note ... I don't actually have the 17-85, so what I tell you is basically what was said here on the forum by others who tested the lens. And one of the major reasons why I did not get one :p .
To give you an idea ... here is a comparison (http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/tamron_28_75d.html)of the Tamron 28-75/2.8 with the Canon 28-135 IS, a lens that is often named as very similar to the 17-85 in optical quality.

people compare the 17-85mm with the 17-40L rather than the 24-70 L
due to it's 17mm end and 'similar' pricing, and 'similar' aperture (f4) I think.
Two comparison's below I found (rather than a review)
Here is a pbase gallery that does a comparison with 17-40L
