Looks like you had some camera shake or motion blur going on. Slow shutter speed?

I didn't take the picture personally, my wife did. Our apartment is kinda dark so I suspect slow shutter speed.

I really need to get a better lens then the kit lens, maybe if I get lucky enough to buy the equipment I want.

the problem here is not the kit lens, nor is it low light. at f4.5, you would have had a shutter speed of 1/80 second, with a good chance of stopping the motion blur, and getting a decent shot here. if you are really shooting low light and dont want to shoot with a flash, consider buying the cheap canon 50 1.8.

until tax check comes in, money for camera equipment is on short supply. wife took the picture, so i didn't have control at the camera at the time the picture was taken
