I would like to hear from people that have shot with both cameras on this one. I find it hard to try another brand of camera but don't want to miss out because I am not open-minded. Well I guess I am a little bit or I wouldn't post this question.

It's good you're looking. Have you looked at imaging resource? They have a comparatometer? that will allow you to look at photos of the same subjects for cameras that you choose.
Also there are reviews/and galleries at dpreview.
Don't know about you, but there are some cameras that just bug the heck out of me and I can't use them.
I had a perfectly good G9 that I traded in for a G11. I didn't buy an LX3 because of cost.
Advantages of the G11 for me?
*wide angle zoom (if not as wide as the LX3)
*tilt screen (just had to have this ;) )
*shorter zoom at telephoto end (compared to G9; not an asset for me)
*better high ISO performance/image quality (but not a deal breaker for me, the G9 was fine)
*I don't shoot RAW; jpegs are fine (I know...I really should, but my computer hates me.)
Since I'm having trouble with my G11 right now I feel I made the wrong choice. It forgets date/time settings and prompts for that to be set before I take a picture.

Thanks Dave. Yes I have looked at the site but not in great detail. They both have there strengths and weaknesses but right now it is hard for me to steer from Canon as it has been THE camera for me for 10 plus years.

Note at the bottom that this is page 2 of 6 pages.
If you continue on to the pages that follow of this expert photographer's notes on the G11, he adds his commentary on the LX3.

Mack V I understand.
When I "needed" a dslr I decided to buy the "N" camera, because the new one fealt so much like my Nikon slr's (F2, F3HP, F90S) and I had some left over lenses. I've barely used the lenses. One of 2 N dslr's has failed and needed service. That was my wife's D40X.
If I could turn back the clock it would be a Canon.
I like the warmth and clarity of Canon images.
On our Newfoundland trip in October most of the images were from my G9. I've replaced it since with a G11 (that failed) and another G11.
I found some very carefully prepared comparison shots made by Tom Hoots on the Sony Talk Forum (dpreview)
Here's a link...to the galleries. Hopefully there's something there.

Mack V==issue I had with G11 no 1 was the internal battery would fail. When that happened the camera would prompt for Date/Time to be reset. Frustrating. Henry's Mississauga solved the problem for me after Nigel (a poster here) helped out.
So I've had a G9 and a G11.
Reason for swap:
* screen!
* wider lens!
What I miss?
* longer lens (so the LX3 is not a good fit for me.)
* camera in my hands is slower to use. I keep the screen folded in when it's not being used.
Tom Hoots compares an S90 directly with the LX3. I like the images from the Canon better. Lens on the G11 is not as wide, but it is longer and the combination suits my style better than the Pany.
And when the battery issue looked like it was unsolvable I went out and bought a Pany ZS3; it's an incredible camera.
Glad we have choices!

Have recently bought G11 after owning DLux4 from when they first came out. Dlux (LX3) great for landscape work with fast wide lens, 16:9 format and sparkly colours. Some of my shots of Venice with it have been loaned off Flickr to advertising agencies so IQ really very good.
However, did feel need of longer zoom and really liked G11's control dials for exposure compensation and ISO. Also tilting screen and (rather small ) viewfinder allow better composition in bright sunlight - sometimes almost shooting blind with DLux. G11 controls better overall though control wheel rather fiddly - but then so is LX3 joystick!
Out of camera JPEGs on the Dlux have clear,film-like colours, whereas the G11's seem a little richer and more saturated.
LX3 is rather more compact...and cheaper!
They're both great cameras - I'm keeping them both!!! Selling Pentax DSLR instead...!
