I have some polarizer newbee questions...

My lenses are :
- 18-55 Canon kit lens
- 28-75 Tamron
- 70-200 F4 (yes, its on its way)

1. I have read that circular polarizers cant be fit on some lens? Is this true? Are any of my lenses in that category?

2. If you had to choose, which lens would you get a polarizing filter for?

I think that all of these lenses use a different diameter filter/polarizer. I'd get one for the Tamron 28-75

Actually both the Tamron and the 70-200L take 67mm filters so one would fit both.

In general, you would probably use a CP mostly for landscape type photography ... so your highest priority would be your wide angle lenses. With your collection, I'd start with the Tamron. As a bonus, GTogs is correct and the same CP would also fit your 70-200/4L.

There are step-up ring adapters (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=98858&is=REG&addedTroughType=search) available that allow for attachment of larger filters to smaller diameter lenses. The one in the link I provided would allow for using 67mm filters on your 58mm lens (18-55).

So ... in summary ... for a non-protective, specialty filter like a CP, you can purchase one to fit your largest lens and then adapter rings to allow use on smaller lenses.

The kit lens front rotating focus which requires that the Polarize filter to be adjusted after focus is locked.

OK, so its about having to adjust the polarizer on a rotating focus ring - not impossible but comes with a pain factor.

Though I would prefer to get it for my widest lens, I will probably not do that. I will get it for my walkaround - the 28-75. And guess I can consider myself lucky for having picked the 70-200 with the same size diameter!!

Thanks everyone....

I would ignore the kit lens as far as fitting a CP filter. Every time you touch the filter to adjust it you will booger up the focus, and vice versa. Not something I would put up with.

If you want a wide-to-normal lens or wide-to-short tele lens for work that would benefit from using a CP filter, I would suggest getting a new lens that doesn't have a rotating front element and, preferably, one that has the same filter thread as your other lenses. You'll probably wind up with a faster and better quality lens to boot.
