This may be a Black-capped Chickadee, but most likely it is a Carolina Chickadee.

Randy, I like the composition and the colors. Good catch! Wonder if it could be sharpened just a touch?

Most likely a crop, right?

I edited the post with a sharpened picture. I may have gone one notch to much.

It is a crop. My lens is not long enough and the birds are not comfortable enough for me to get that close. I'll post the original.

Back to the sharpening. Sometime...most of the time I am a little disappointed in my 70-200 2.8 IS when it comes to tack sharp focusing. It's not reliable enough to automatically focus on these birds so I manually focus. I miss the old split circle my old AE1-Program had.

Yep, Carolina, the two birds are nearly identical but the black capped is a little larger and has distintive white streaks on it's wing.

Thanks for the tip Ron, I thought mine was a Carolina due to it's size and I believe the black capped ranges a little more north of St. Louis.

These are neat little birds to watch. I would love to catch one in flight coming in to the feeder.

According to my field guide St. Louis is close to the southern edge of the black capped chickadee's range and the northern edge of the Carolina's so you might see both there.

I was lucky enough to catch one in flight with a little planning and some sunflower seeds a while back:D .
