Frustrated after a long day of rain, I managed to get a couple of shots in the late afternoon when there was a brief pause between showers. These are both three exposure, hand held hdr's.
Looking into a break in the storm.

Looking at the backside of the storm. (The wind was blowing hard so I was surprised at how well the trees turned out.)

I think these are great, Gene. Such drama, yet not overdone. In the first image I love that you included the fence. I would crop out that bit of roof (I think it is) though as it has no function and distracts.

Thanks Levina.
Yes, the dark area at the top is my patio awning. If it were cropped, I'd lose a lot of the more dramatic clouds at the top of the frame. Ideally, I should have reshot the photo but the clouds/sun was constantly...and quickly changing.

You don't have to constrain your proportions when you crop. It's liberating to just crop what needs to be cropped without any regard for standard dimensions.
If you're not trying to make a standard or generic photograph, then don't limit yourself to standard or generic frames. Crop at will.

I love that 2nd shot; it jumps right off my monitor. You captured the light just right!

CameraBuff, thanks for the kind words.
rhomsy, thanks. Constraining proportions wasn't a concern. I just felt I'd lose too much of the more dramatic dark clouds at the top...and I didn't mind seeing the top of my awning.
Here's what it would look like with a crop from just at the start of the awning.
