Any tips for shooting fireworks that I should know for tonight? I don't have a tripod (wish I did but I don't have the $$) but my lenses are listed in my sig. Which should I use? What should my settings be?

It's going to be extremely hard without a tripod. My best suggestion is go out and buy a cheap one, you can get one for ~$20. Or make a remote shutter release.

i used a 20 dollar tripod which was wobbly..but hey it worked and i didnt have a remote shutter release..i even turned off mirror lock up just to get more shots..
if you want to save up for a better tripod .
use a beanbag ontop of your car!.
we just sat by our cars because the stadium was packed (at a raceway).
anyways i may also suggest 4 sec SS and f/8 or even f/11
some of my shots ..the colors were washed out because of the faster aperature.

Felix.. Nice! The first two (ok..first three) are Incredible!! I have taken many shots with film, probably too many, and was really curious as to how they would look digital.
For lack of an available tripod this weekend, I didn't get any shots. (ok.. I could have used the bean bag thing, and I've got a cool window mount suction cup thingy too.. but I only remembered that there were fireworks when I heard them booming in the distance.)

Lee,
thanks for the nice comments :)
funny actually
this year we went to a racetrack and the stands were packed by the time we walked over there etc.
so we just walked back to the parking lot and set up a few chairs right there and i think the shots turned out better this way than if we would have been closer to them.
we sat down drank a few water bottles :) it was hot.. and then the fireworks started..
then i set up the camera which took forever :D and attempted to rig up a cork with a string so i wouldnt have to hold the button down since i dont have a remote but ended up just pushing it down alot ! :) it was fun.. im pleased for my first attempts.

First Attempts?? must have missed that.
Most of my good shots have also been taken from some out of the way place, where there aren't so many distracting people.. ;)

Bah... I did have a lot of trouble w/out a tripod, but I don't want to spend money on a cheap one and then later on buy a better one, so next year I'll probably be equipped with a tripod and cable release. However... the effect I got from not having a tripod came out pretty cool, so I'm just going to pretend I meant to do it that way. Haha.

Just got done with our fireworks here in my Home town and I thought I would post a couple shots that I took from my front yard. This was my second try at shooting fireworks the first time was a terrible failure. These are a little better Please tell me what you think.

My efforts essentially went out the window. I had everything set up before I even went out of the house. Camera set to Manual mode, ISO set to 100, shutter set to Bulb, aperature set to f/16, kit lens installed (widest lens I have). Made sure I had my tripod mount, tripod, remote release and a comfy seat.
Walking around the grounds before the fireworks show, I decided to see if I could fire off a couple good shots of people enjoying the evening's events before the show. Clicked over to ISO-800, did a few test exposures, nothing much to get. So, back to the chair, set up on the tripod again, double-checked all my settings (except, unfortunately, the ISO setting) and waited for the show to begin.
Also, somewhere along the way, I ended up at full zoom (55mm). I started clicking away on the remote release, cussing myself for sitting so close and having fireworks spill out of the frame. Click, cuss, click, cuss.... After about 80% of the show was complete, I realized I had the lens zoomed the wrong way. Got what little was left of the show at full wide. Unfortunately, I remember the ISO-800 setting after I got home.
Regardless of my poor memory skills, I did get one decent shot. And this was before I zoomed back out wide. At least I shot in RAW. :D

Thought I'd give it a try with my XT and the kit lens. This is probably the best of the lot, shot from the pier where the Natchez docks along the river in New Orleans.

One more from New Orleans. I know the fireworks are overexposed, but I sort of like what happens with the people in the foreground during the 8 second exposure.

Here are two from my gallery... It was a great time. I had to go out twice, because I wasn't prepared the first time.
All were taken with a 2 sec shutter at F11 using a Tamron 28-75 in Manual Focus set to Infinity.
You can see more of my favorites in my gallery,

I'll toss up two I took that I liked. I brought the wrong lens this year and forgot the other at home so I couldn't get a wide enough angle for most of my attempted shots. I still gave it a try and ended up taking 72 pics, and only five came out ok.
Never shot fireworks before so I wasn't sure what settings to use but I think they came out ok.

I didn't mess with that second one hardly at all, it came out like that.
These were taken in Nutley, NJ last night.

jfrancho, i luv the last one, looks almost surreal with cartoon stars, very nice, but the full size is unbelievable!~Thanks! My favorite is the first, it really looks like a palm tree. All shot on bulb using the remote. The star effect is from the cheezy bokeh on the kit lens - six blade iris, I think. It really excels at night shots, stopped wayyyy down. I started with the 50 f/1.4, but it was too smooth, and too long. You can see the rest here (http://plan-b.smugmug.com/gallery/637893/1/27186056).

i just love the ones where everything just flies straight out from the center..totally straight..
like a start blowing up or something :)
if i have a fireworks shot and i need to crop it..lets say the fireworks are 25% of the pic.
how large do you think i could blow them up and not make them look funky?
