I've looked through my Collins bird guide 5 times and i just cannot identify this bird :(

Remember this bird was photographed in the UK.

Young Thrush?


I snapped a bird recently also couldnt identify it from Collins however try emailing a small jpeg to


editor@britishbirds.co.uk

They Identified it for me (a very scruffy Coal tit)

YEs, I was going to say young thrush too, pretty sure that is what it is. Great capture.

I can tell you what it isn't. It isn't a thrush - the beak is the wrong shape.

I think you might have caught a juvenile Linnet. Do you have any more from other angles?

I think it might be a juvenile Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis).

Its difficult to tell from this view, did you catch a glimpse of any wingbars or other distinguishing marks on its tail or wings?

I'm not sure if they are indigenous to Europe and the UK but it looks like a pine siskin to me.

Actually looking at the Eurasian Siskin in Collins it does look like a young Siskin..
And inhabits conifers etc.

Im not much up on birds but there ye go..

OK I've been home and looked through my books and I now think it is probably as young siskin. In fact fairly certain that it is. I think the black/dark area on the tail confirms that
