So what exactly happens when you fall off while riding one of these? Do you just get destroyed or what?

Basically. Picked up by the wave, tossed back over the top, and slammed all the way back down.

I've taken some tumbles on 8-10 footers that were pretty awful - I can't even imagine what a Maverick's wipeout must feel like when it's really going off!

That's what I thought. I've had the same thing happen while bodysurfing at the wedge in Newport right by the jetty, about the same thing 8-10 foto waves. I couldn't imagine getting wasted by one of those suckers.

It varies so much. In the shot here the guy is actually in fairly decent shape because he is somewhat close to the shoulder ( the non breaking part of the wave) and might get let out the back. What is bad about this surf is the fact that if your unlucky and take the first wave in the set like, Shane Dorian did on this day, you have the unfortunate task of dealing with 2,3 or more waves which is usually what ends up killing people. Shane (1 of the worlds greatest Big Wave surfers almost lost his life that weekend). That is how Todd Chesser died and most likely how Mark Foo died, 2 legendary Big Wave surfers.

The wedge is gnarly for so many differnt reasons, super shallow water. But I will take a soar shoulder any day over a 30 second breathless dark abyss.

That perspective really gives the wave justice. Every time I see a heave wave (Teahupoo!) I imagine how heavy a bucket of water is, and how many buckets of water are over his head!!
