Off to Australia later this year on a 3 month trip and am going to buy a few extra memory cards to take with me. Thinking of buying a couple of Lexar 8GB 80X Premium 11 CompactFlash Cards at £16.99 each see

http://www.mymemory.co.uk/compatible-memory/Digital_Cameras/Canon/Canon+EOS+400D_Memory_Cards

Can anyone recommend them for use with a 400D ???

The Lexar 233x may be a better choice for the long run. At this point I use a minimum of 233x/266x when buying cards that are rated that way.

Good luck.

A simple explanation can be read on wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CompactFlash.
Basically the higher the rating, the higher the max read/write speed will be. Common ratings include 133x, 233/266x, 300x all the way up to 533x and 600x. For a rebel, you could do just fine with 80x or 133x I'd assume

I'm not sure that with a 400D you will see the difference anyway, you are still limited by the camera hardware. And even if you expect buying a better camera in a year, at that time the price of the card would have been reduced by half.
Then buy a good card brand (sandisk, lexar, etc...) but choose the cheapest within all the speed equal or higher than your camera.

The 80x works fine on my 30D. I haven't done any formal tests, but seeing as I really don't burst very often anyways(and when I have if there was an effect it was negligible) at the price point the lexar was a steal.
