Hello folks!
I just bought a Canon 350D. Unfortunatly I have some anoying problems with some pictures. Hopefully somebody can help
http://www.ambermedia.de/pix/pic1.jpg (cup)
http://www.ambermedia.de/pix/pic2.jpg (trouser)
http://www.ambermedia.de/pix/pic3.jpg (fence)
As you can see there is a stripe or a line between the cup an the background. On the one side it is magenta on the other side cyan. Even worse on the picture with the trousers. Exactly between trouser an the legs is a dark cyan-line.
Can anyone help me. Camera is two days old.
Greetings from Berlin.

Welcome to the forum! :)
I think what you are seeing is chromatic abberation (CA), not really a fault of the camera more a characteristic of the lens I believe. Some lenses are more prone to CA than others but it tends to be more noticeable in areas of high contrast in images taken with cheaper lenses and at wider apertures. Someone more technical will probably come along with a more detailed explanation soon! :)
What lens and at what focal length/aperture were you using for these shots?

Thanks for your fast reply.
I used the standard 18-55 mm Canon lens which came with my camera (EOS 350D Kit).

I think the kit lens is prone to a bit of chromatic abberation at all focal lengths, there are ways of reducing the effect with a bit of post processing trickery in Photoshop but I'm guessing that these are 100% crops you have shown here so its probably not going to be all that noticeable in an image sized for the web or printed out at 7x5 so don't lose too much sleep over it! :)

Try this (http://www.outdooreyes.com/photo26.php3) if you have PhotoShop. Another thing that will help a bit is stopping down the lens as much as possible.

That's C.A. and most lenses will do it to some extent, usual round the edge of the image. That, however, is pretty vile even for the kit lens. I'd reject that lens as faulty and return it for a replacement / refund. It should be better than that.

use tripod and smaller aperture to overcome CA problem.

I'd like to see the entire images - looks like CA, though it's hard to tell as you will tend to get color separation on high-contrast boundaries that are not in the focus plane, especially if the lens is shot at it's widest aperture.

I can NOT see what your are talking about!
Maybe it's the way you resized the photo's?

I think this is not bad at all compared to the color cast that I used to get with my 3 year old 75-300mm kit lens. :) Had posted a similar thread a few days back. The thread also has a photoshop solutions mentiond - http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=82684&highlight=350d+problem

Hello @all,
at first: all pictures were test-photos. Not very creative I know ;)
The trouser is beige - even the edge. In this picture the trouser is beige but the edge is dark cyan. If this is normal with a 350D i better bring the camera back to the store. We took some other pictures and on almost all edges are these weird lines.
Thanx for your help.

It def looks like there is something wrong with either the lens or the camera...its probably the lens. Maybe the store will let you test out a different lens to make sure that is it.

I don't see the lines you've mentioned. I could be that you monitor is not calibrated.

Anotherthing is your picture looks very soft. Try setting the camera up to take either in Large Fine JPEG or RAW and in Av Mode. Set Aperature to f/8 and maintain at least 1/30 w/ only the center focus on, adjust iso as needed and take a picture of an object with horizontal lines and vertical lines outdoor or lit with natural light.

Looks like my kit lens...soft and plagued with CA. Wait till you see purple trees.

I see the lines. I agree that it is probably chromatic aberration and likely in the lens. I bought the same camera and lens kit and I don't see that, so you might see if you can exchange the lens. Or if necessary, the whole kit.

Congrats on the Camera, but the the 18-55mm kit lens is not something I would use for more than snapshots. The CA is not quite as bad on my copy but is there nonetheless. This lens is not quite such a bargain as the 50mm f/1.8 II. If you are critical enough, which you are, to see the color separations you will not be satisfied with this lens. As you may have noticed a few folks could not see what you were talking about. " Horses for courses"...peace.

Hey Folks,
thanx for all your replies. I have an old Nikon Coolpix 995. No problems with that one. A friend just bought a 300D with the same lens. No problems like this.
It is almost on every pictures and not only on the ones with light from the front (hope you know what I mean, I am no native speaker :) )
We took a picture of our dalmation and between the black spots and the white fur were magenta stripes. Weird isnŽt it?!
I think it is not an usual camera or lens problem. I hope so.
All the best

i also have the 350D and my kit lens shows some signs of CA (don't they all) but it's nowhere near as bad as the examples you've shown (i've never seen the cyan borders on any of my images)........... sathi's suggestion was a good one..take it back to the shop and have them test it with another lens........... (it is your statutory right if you are not sattisfied that they exchange it, and you are clearly not satisfied) as with all man made items faults can appear in the production.even with canons high standards.....
