View Full Version : Buy 12-24 now or wait for 10-20?

I'm ready to place and order at B&H, but i'm not sure whether to go for the Tokina 12-24 now or to wait for the Sigma 10-20 to come out and be reviewed. I have no immediate need for the lens, but shipping to me is expensive enough that I want to do it in one shipment, and I want the other things in my cart reasonably soon. I'd use this lens on holiday, for some weddings (hopefully), and for the interesting distortion that an ultrawide lens gives.
Would you wait for the 10-20, or get the proven Tokina 12-24 F4?

I would wait for the 10-20, no doubt, or else the last 2mm would leave me sleepless.

Why not Canon efs 10-22? other than price.

From what i've read the Canon isn't great at 10mm, but to me the price is the main factor, given how often i'd use the lens.

I'd wait for the Sigma, or just get the Canon if you can justify the extra cost for a lens you probably won't use all that often. The 2mm difference of the Tokina doesn't sound like much, but in horizontal angle of view on a 1.6x sensor, it's the difference between about 87 degrees @ 12mm vs. about 97 degrees @ 10mm. I know you really like fast, constant aperture lenses, but it almost doesn't make sense for a lens this wide, because at f/4 you dof will often be too shallow for the field of view because of the extreme angle. And besides, at 18mm and below, the Canon is the fastest anyway. ;)

Accord to B&H the Tokina does 99 degrees, the Sigma does 102.4 degrees. There's always something better around the corner, I can get it later if I need it, so i've ordered the Tokina 12-24 :) Also ordered Monaco color calibration system (not pro), battery grip, and a new strap :)

Good choice ... the Tokina is a very well liked lens and they're built to last. I'm sure you'll get some great results with it.

Will do. I should really submit reviews for some of these lenses I own some time, but they're all common ones so no real need I guess.

Good to see you building your array of lens before out Photo Meet next month. :D
I'll be looking forward to "borrowing" this 12mm wide angle.

.....Also ordered <stuff> and a new strap :)
Not a POTN strap? Shock!
Will be interested to see how you get on with the new wide-angle lens. One is next on my wish list

Nah, I look like a big enough camera nerd with the camera, a grip, a bracket, a flash, and a 70-200 F2.8 IS without adding advertising a forum on a strap around my neck! Might get it as an extra thing later for when i'm around fellow camera nerds ;)

Accord to B&H the Tokina does 99 degrees, the Sigma does 102.4 degrees.99 degrees for a 12mm is most likely diagonal angle of view, not the horizontal numbers that I quoted. If the Tokina is that close in diagonal angle of view to the Sigma, it's probably a much more distorted view at the corners than the Sigma.
Good luck with the new lens.

The standard one is going to say Op/Tech USA on it, which I don't think is any less nerdy than one that shows the forum name. In fact, it may be even more nerdy because it says Tech and advertises U.S.A. on it. ;) :D
I figure showing the forum name, I might run into another POTN member at an event, and other people get to see the web address of the site that helped me so much, so it might help them as well.

Interesting, I assumed it was the horizontal for some reason. And I figure a logo is normal enough, better than a URL for professional work, and i'll try and black it out anyway.

Tim,
I went for the 12-24 and love it. I was at the ALMS race this weekend and used it a lot in the pits. I started out using my Tamron 28-75 in the pits. I switch to the 12-24 and it didn't come off until I was taking shots on the track.
There a few shot with the 12-24 here: http://911cg.myphotoalbum.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=Limerock
And here are some shots of the first day I had it: http://911cg.myphotoalbum.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=album04

You said - "I have no immediate need for the lens" -- Then what's your hurry? prices drop and new stuff comes out, so you have no reason to buy immediately.
-- but if your do --- Get the Tokina for sure.

ChrisG- your shots of your cat and surrounding neighborhood made me buy that Tokina. Sweet! Nice shots of the ALMS race by the way. I went to Indy for the F1 debacle, rented a 400mm L, what a waste of time.

Thanks,
I really am having a good time with the 12-24.
To bad about Indy. I was pissed and I was watching at home. I can't even imagine how pissed off I would have been if I was there.
I'm still need some practice on my car racing shots. Those were my best ones. I think I need to get a mono pod if I plan to do more of that.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I dont think this is worth posting a new thread over:
Is the Tokina ONLY compatable with Digital Cameras, or would it work on my full frame film?
Will the new sigma work on my film camera?
Is my only choice right now for a wide angle of that degree the Sigma 12-24 4.5-5.6 (or whatever it is)?
Thanks :)

It won't work on full frame, half works on 1.3X crop.

Unless its the perfect woman in which case the wait is ever lasting!

Is my only choice right now for a wide angle of that degree the Sigma 12-24 4.5-5.6 (or whatever it is)?I believe the only super wide choices for a full frame (15mm or wider) are the Sigma 12-24, 14mm (Canon, Sigma, Tamron), 15mm fisheye (Canon, Sigma), and the 8mm circular fisheye (Sigma, Pelang).

Wait for the Sigma. Then buy the Canon. That way perhaps you will have the money saved up by then.
