I've been thinking about replacing my DRebel with the 20D. A friend of mine just mentioned to me that the 20D's replacement is coming out Sept? 12mp? Anybody know more details on this?

Thanks
Andy

As of now it is just a rumor. Besides, I thought the new 12mp was going to be a 1D body? I guess we will all just wait and see.

It'll probably be next April at the earlier before the 20D is replaced but most likely October of next year.

I think, just a thought mind you, that Canon will probably hit us with a 12mp body this fall in plenty of time for Christmas. I don't see Canon dragging their feet much longer to match Nikons 12mp D2X. Canon already has 2 winners with the XT and 20D. And they are moving quite a few 1DMKII's with that $500 rebate right now. I would say fall would be a great time to drop a bomb on Nikon, and finish out the last quarter of the year on a winning note. I know I am waiting impatiently for a 12mp Canon body. I just hope it is more in line with the 1DMKII then the 20D, and a full frame or 1.3x crop at the most.

I foresee a 12 megapixel 1.3 or 1.6 camera for around, say, $2500, to compete with the D2x head-on. These are exciting times. If it's 1.3 and low noise/high DR, I might look at it. Otherwise, I'll keep my 1D Mk II. It's a wonderful brick.

Oh yeah, also, I don't think for a moment that Nikon is sitting on their assets. Expect something above the D70 before Christmas as well. Christmas of what year, I don't know...

The good thing about Canon, is that they make their own sensor chip. I believe that Nikon relies on Sony for theirs. This gives Canon the jump in the mp wars, one I am happy to participate in!

The information I have suggests a 12MP camera called the 5D, from a source that's usually quite reliable, but given the scarcity of information/evidence they've given me i'm not going to put money on it. Given how many people are claiming knowledge i'd personally not upgrade now, i'd wait.

Sounds like a digital to sit in the old EOS5/3 terratory, half way between the 10's series (D30, D60, 10D and 20D) and the 1 Series, just like the film EOS's.

Probaly can't call it a 3D though, might be confusing ;) If they keep to their film EOS naming, it would mean a 50D to replace the 20D (30D might be confused with D30).

Traditionally the replacements come every 18 months or so, which would put replacement time mid 2006......so, I guess the question is: are you willing to wait that long to upgrade

They could of course, cut the price still further. That would be a real body blow for other manufacturers trying to catch up. All the development costs must be recouped by strong initial sales at a healthy markup. If it just isn't possible to sell at the prices necessary due to market forces, then that would slow development for further bodies.

Canon win.
