I just went to FedEx to ship my lens to Canon and they said they Don't offer insurance.. They offer declared value, which might not cover the price of the lens if damaged or lost..
Should I ship it with declared value?

Yet one more reason I WILL NOT ship via FedEx.

I don't understand why "declared value" would not cover the cost of the lens. So far as I'm concerned, my (example) 100-400L is "declared" to be worth whatever Amazon/ B&H's present price +shipping, and to be honest, -- the value of any defects. Mine has none, so the declared value is the cost of replacement.
I'll tell you what though, you want to BE SURE you ship whatever Fedx's term for "signature required" is, or your insurance isn't worth squat. the bozo's that they are, they don't automatically "make this happen." I bought a used tripod some time ago, insured, but the seller neglected to require a signature. It's the only package that managed to walk right off my front porch.

I use the USPS almost exclusively now. I've never had an issue w/ them. I ALWAYS require a signature. My only negative about the USPS' system is the fact that their tracking information doesn't update as quickly as UPS or FedEx. I sent something out to Cali via FedEx once. The guy called and said he got it. I checked the FedEx tracking system and it still had it at the sort facility. Took them 3 days to update that it was delivered. I hear that's not the norm, but still.
