I tried to get some pics to choose from for his birth announcement, mom thinks they should have been sent already!!! He stayed asleep for about 2 minutes after we took his top off and then got really really mad. He settled down after a feeding for like 5 mins, so we will try again tomorrow for some better shots.

Anyway, any CC is welcome and appreciated. I was using what natural light there was through window, 430 and 580 OC on about 1/8 power for fill through white umbrellas. Minimal processing, just raw coversion, white balance, and faithful applied. Exif should be intact.

This is really my first attempt with OCF and newborn photography, any constructive advice is welcome!!

In the first picture it looks like the focus point is on his nose, and the eyes are out of focus. Make sure the eyes are in focus, especially when shooting at wide apertures where the DOF is small. The other shots are better in this regard.

Thanks Paul! I was trying to focus on his eyes, but he was
flailing all over the place. I ended up bumping up the shutter to max
sync speed just to get these!!

How does the color look? He is still getting rid of some bilirubin,
and has a slight yellow cast, which will hopefully be gone soon!

If you haven't already been there, I'd recommend you check out the Strobist (http://www.strobist.com)website - if OCF is something you're wanting to get into.

You mentioned that you "bumped up the shutter to max sync speed" to get the shots. Couple things. First, your max sync speed on that 50D is 1/250, not 1/200. But you shouldn't need more than about 1/160 to stop kid motion anyway. And if the light is mostly strobe, your shutter speed doesn't matter anyway.

Second - this shot doesn't look like ambient played much role. Hard to tell if the shadows on the right were from the window or one of your strobes. Did you take any shots with ambient only (at 1/200 f/2.8)? My guess is that this lighting could easily have been achieved with zero ambient, all flash (thus eliminating any motion blur).

My guess that your Nifty Fifty is the reason the eyes are out of focus on shot #1. You can't hit a moving target with a Nifty. You would have gotten better luck with your 70-200 at f/2.8 than your Nifty at f/2.8.

I went back and looked on the first photo, the focus point was on his nose. I'm going to try the 70-200 at some point, but my current make shift studio (extra bedroom) is to small for it.

thanks for the comments and i'll keep working to improve!

Your baby was so handsome and his face was very charming.

Well, since you asked so nicely, here are a few I took this past weekend. I'm still working on a processing/work flow, but am only working with DPP right now and trying to learn more with GIMP (Can't talk my way into PS).

The following were taken with the 70-200, wait, some with the 50/1.8. Two ocf, one left, one right 45deg.

1. I like this one! Actually like all of them, but i'm biased!!

2. Had to get some shots with the Steelers gear!! Can't wait to buy him a ball cap, jersey, and his first terrible towel

3/4. Threw in a prop or two that family and friends bought for us.

Thanks for looking, c/c always appreciated. He is learning to be a good model, but still needs work at keeping those hands away from his face!!! I still haven't been brave enough to try any diaperless shots! Maybe soon!
