How do I take Pic of moving vehicle

I have been asked to take several pictures of moving vehicles and the person wants sharp background as well as the passing car I think the vehicles will be driving about 60mph. Any suggestions? I will go and do several practice runs but its still nice to have your opinions and suggestions as far as settings, I am using a 50d and more than likely a 24-70 lens 2.8

Any of you have any similar examples of pictures?

The basics remain the same. Continuous autofocus using the AF servo setting, and track the target as it approaches the point where the image will be made. As you've noted, the only major choice is shutter speed.

A relatively slow shutter speed, 1/100 in the case of the #20, gives an illusion of movement through motion blur of the background.

A fast shutter speed, such as 1/1600 with the #48, stops all motion.


It's easier to use a higher shutter speed, because a fast shutter is most likely to stop action in most cases. Slower shutter speeds are effective in creating the "panning" effect of motion blur, but the effect is unpredictable and there's no guarantee it will work with every shot. Lazy photographers such as this writer set the camera to continuous shooting, fire several frames with slow shutter speeds as the vehicle passes, then later review the images and find the ones that work. A very few people can nail a slow shutter "panning" shot at every attempt, but the rest of us cheat and shoot lots of frames to get a few good ones.

Of course, a telephoto lens is best in cases like this.
