The Kinsol Trestle (Vancouver Island, Canada) is a difficult one to shoot ... it is massive, steep river bank each side, and vegetation everywhere. A fascinating spot.
I'll be going back for shots from the other end of the trestle, and maybe more from this side. Would appreciate comments on what I have so far, and wouldn't mind some suggestions on possible angles/shots I'm maybe not seeing. The trestle will soon be upgaded to a pedestrian crossing so I want to get more shots BEFORE work starts in a month or two.
1. Steep bank that is risky descending for this shot

2. Hard to get sun/shade advantage because of the trees and steep riverbank

3. View of deck from south end

4. View of west side of trestle from south end of bridge

5. View of west side again -- sun was at its highest on this day and still got shade on the lower portion

6. Yes, I climbed "inside

The close-up detail here is interesting, but I'd really like to see the entire bridge and surrounding area, if it's possible to get that shot? Mind your footing though! :)

Nice shots. Clear, sharp and vivid!
I'd love to see you go back when it's darker with a tripod and get some long exposures... maybe some lights coming through the trestle at that point.
I like what you were going for with #3 and #4. Perhaps work with some Depth of Field to work out a focal point a little more?
Nice job!

I think this is a very difficult subject to photograph. The last one has some interest to me.

What a waste of wood. You could easily build a 3 houses with that wood. Nice shots. I too want to see more.

The bridge is literally in the middle of nowhere. There are no lights in the vicinity ... it is all bush. Would need to have good battery power and some powerful lights for that effect and I sure don't own anything like that. Possibly during construction there will be some site lighting, but the area will likely be fenced off too.

Very good read thanks. Was just kidding, and think its a beautiful looking structure which i too would love to conserve. If i lived close to it i too would have hiked/walked there to shoot it.
Would love to see the photos of when u go back to reshoot.

More pics! From the north end of the trestle.
The angle of the sun certainly highlighted the grayness of the old timber. I have a polarizer but have never used it so didn't even think of it ... would it have helped with the glare?

Interesting detail in the first few, all good, but six is superb! As an engineer, I've always had an interest in bridges and I'd love to visit this one.

Well, Jim, you are invited to stay at our house. It is only about 8 km away. Just let me know your flight number and date!
And I can even arrange for you to chat with the rail engineer responsible for it while it was a working bridge. He's a sweet old fellow who is sharp as a tack despite his advanced years.
Even more fun, if you PM me your email address, I'll send you pdfs of the working drawings and as builts for this structure.
