Having lurked and read everything there is to read about my normal lens options for the 20D, I finally decided to stop waiting and pick up the Canon 28mm 1.8 USM. Until this morning I thought I'd grab the Sigma 30mm, but the price premium changed my mind.
At the same price, I might have gone for the faster Sigma, but to pay more money for a lens that won't work on a full frame camera and won't necessarily be compatible in the future seemed like a bad investment. No way is a 2/3 stop advantage worth that.
I've read plenty of a so-so reviews of the 28 1.8, but I have a hard time believing that a mid-range Canon prime is going to produce anything but VERY sharp images when used properly. Certainly it should provide quite a low-light advantage over the 17-85 IS I'm using now.
No questions... just thought I'd share my thoughts in case someone else is trying to make the same decision. Incidentally, while B&H is back-ordered, Adorama has the 28 1.8 in stock.
Cheers,
Lucien
p.s. I got my POTN strap in the mail last week. Much nicer than the stock Canon one.
