Live music - Team Sleep

I shot these photos on assignment for Fasterlouder.com.au (http://www.fasterlouder.com.au). Team sleep is a side-project of Deftones front-man, Chino Moreno. Their sound was not really my thing, but they're certainly very good at what they do.

I would have liked to have known before hand that I was restricted to the first three songs only as I left the media pit half way through the second song to get some wide shots and when I returned to the pit again I was told to leave by one of the crew. It's all rock'n'roll!

I'll never understand that f@*cking you can shoot...now you can't, mentality.

Still, it's all gravy.

Do you ever shoot or convert to B/W. I think that when the lights are really coloured the B/W can make things a little more refined. More subtle.You can really lower the brightness, up the contrast and create an isolated image, without unwanted attention from bg and oof band members.

Smudge: I tend to reserve B&W conversions as a rescue method, particularly when the lighting has been purely red. One of the things I love most about concert photography is the effect of good lighting. I'll upload some recent B&W photos from a concert I shot last week very soon.

About the 3 song rule - I don't have a problem with it per say - but it would be great if the the editor/promoter/manager (anybody????) would let me know before the show starts. I tend to keep moving the whole way through the set to maximise the variety of my coverage.

I also understand where the 3 song rule comes from, but the logic defies me. The best rock'n'roll shots are where the performers have settled into the show and is hot, sweaty and rocking out.

Look forward to seeing them...B/W ...Rescue...oh well...horses for courses as we say here in the u.k... personally, I'm not a fan of the coloured lights. But you've done a good job with them.

just checked out the rest of em on the Fasterlouder website, there's some crackers there. Good job on the skin tones amidst all that colour.

What camera lens did you use for those

I use a 20D and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. I was shooting at either 1600 or 3200 depending on the light.

Is it hard to get photo access at gigs over in the UK? I'll be moving over later this year and will be looking to shoot over there also.

Wow that tamron does pretty well. 3200, I'm only ever that brave when I'm drunk.

As for access in uk. Your asking the wrong person. I've never shot anything bigger than pubs and very small clubs, where they are desperate for the exposure and nearly drag you in to take phots. All I do for these is find a band I like check out the listing, ring the promotion company, promise them a copy of any thing worth while and I've not had a no yet.

As for the bigger stuff, I'm afraid I just don't know. I'm new to all this. Not sure if I'd ever want to do bigger stuff at all, you lose the intamacy that I really enjoy when the lead singer goes walk about and you can get shots of band and public at the same level.
