Canon 100mm macro 1:1 at what distance ?

I know that the Canon 100mm macro gives 1:1 magnification and has a minimum working distance of 5.9 inches (if I remember right). One thing I havent understood yet is: Does the lens give 1:1 magnification only at the minimum distance from the subject ???
(and I'm not taking about subjects that are the size of the sensor or larger....)

Yes, the further you are away from the subject the lower the magnification gets. It only gives 1:1 magnification at the minimum focusing distance which as you state is when the end of the lens is about 6 inches from the subject. :)
