a warm greeting to you all on this fine St Swiven's day. i am new to these parts but seek your wisdom and also shoot motorsport. i am awaiting the arrival of a 70-200mm f2.8 canon lens which will eventually combine with a 50d. now because the idea is that i have the option of getting alot closer to my intended subject it has been suggested that i use a 2x canon extender. what i want to know from you guys out there using the same setup is whether there is any reduction in picture quality or auto focus etc, etc?
any help would be much appreciated.
thanks.

Hi SG, - great name by the way.
I have both the 1.4x II and 2.0x II extenders.
Your AF will work fine with the 70-200/2.8 and 2x combo and any of the L series with an aperture of 2.8 and up to F4.0 (someone correct me if I'm wrong on the F4.0 thing)
With any TC there will always be some loss of quality.
If you are in good light there won't be too much of a problem, but you will still lose some image quality.
Some people really dislike the 2x but I've never found it to be an issue if used within its limitations.
I use mine with the 70-200 and and also the 300/2.8.
I have also stacked the two converters with OK results if I've been in a real pinch for focal length

I have to agree with Phil.
I also have the 70-200 f2.8 and have just bought the Canon 2X.
So far I have only been taking test shots, in theory the lens should focus a little slower due to the two stops difference when adding the extender. Cannot say I have noticed this. The real test will come on Sunday when I go to my local track.

I like the combo. See here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=6598425&postcount=6).

70-200 f/2.8 + 2x makes f/5.6.
I use this combo all the time and it works great for me. I don't notice any IQ loss. Although when I also have a 300mm f/2.8 it is noticeable.

...had a little trouble finding this thread due to it's relocation, but thank you to everyone who contributed. in the end i think what i'm going to end up with in the 50d, 70-200mm lens and extender (should) be a vast improvement on what i have now. as i bust my arse to do recon of rally stages to gain suitable position i guess i'm keen to get a good return on efforts made.
cheers all.

Hey Snotty,
If you're shooting rally, the 70-200 should be more than ample without the extender.
It's a perfect length for using at rallies.
Rallies are one of the reasons I got mine and I don't think I've ever used my 1.4x or 2x at a rally.

I find that using the 2x on the 70-200 does decrease the image quality. Whenever needed, though, it does provide the reach and helps to get the shot.
