Hi there, I was looking for some help! I cant figure out the display on the top of my 40D. When I press the focus points button on the back of the camera, I dont see the points in the top display. I see the points through the viewfinder and can ONLY change them using the joystick dial, but from what I have read I should be able to see them on the top display too?? Any ideas?? Any advice, Thank you so much!!!

Canon 40D manual (http://www.canon.ca/support_images/RightNow_Images/Digital_Camera/EOS40D_HG_EN.pdf) page 79 shows the top lcd display and the AF point display.

Yeah, that's rather bizarre. When you press that button, you should see the current focus point(s) light up in the viewfinder and also on the top LCD. You should then be able to scroll through them with the thumb wheel. I can't think of any settings that would keep that from showing up. If you can't get an answer here, you may want to try giving Canon a call directly. . .and probably wait an hour to get someone who can't help you, but it's worth a shot.

How have you set the camera to select the focusing point? Custom Function III: 3 (C. Fn III:3) sets the focus point selection method.

If this is set to 0, you will see the focus points in the top LCD when you press the button on the back of the camera. You can then use either the multi-controller (joystick) or the rear wheel to select the desired focus point.

Set this to 1 and you can use the joystick to select the focus point without pushing the button first. The focus points will not show in the top LCD. (Emphasis mine...)

On setting 3, focus point selection is controlled directly by the rear wheel. Again, the focus points will not show in the top LCD and the wheel switch has to be on.

If you are using the multi-controller direct method (setting 2), pressing the back button will activate all the focus points at once. One of the nice things about that setting is that if you press directly on the joystick, you can select the center focus point instantly.

It sounds like you have your camera set on either setting 2 or 3...

2 1/2 years and i never realized the focus points would display in the top lcd.

I guess I need to re-read the manual...
