Still no males showing up this year but thought you might enjoy this persistent little female Ruby throat that frequents our garden.
Comments and critiques always welcome.

Beautiful pictures. I wish I could do something even close to this. What were the settings?
Somehow, I can always do better with regular film shhot!

Thanks to all!
Chenu, these were all shot with the 20D/100-400L combo at 400mm, shutter priority at 1/500 using the 580EX for fill on high speed sync with -2 exposure compensation dialed in.
Hope that helps.

WOW!!! Those are perfect! I can't believe how sharp they are and how much detail you captured! I need to practice and get the ones in my backyard. Saw the first male Ruby-throat this year just a few minutes ago. I was thrilled as I usually "just" see females!

Funny, the same thing with me. I got some great shots with my Minolta Maxxum camera and a 300mm Tamron lens last year. They came out surprisingly good. I can't get a damn good shot with my Rebel XT yet. I guess I just don't understand this camera yet.

Thanks, Ngannet! I still haven't seen a male in the garden, but there's still a lot of summer left so, hopefully, he'll show up.
I think the problems you and Chenu are having getting good shots with your digital setup just goes back to camera familiarity. If you've used film for lots of years, you have all the skills needed for digital. Just keep at it until you are as comfortable with the camera in your hands as you are with the film camera. Learning all the knobs and buttons just takes practice. I've looked at your gallery and it's obvious you have the photographic skills necessary. Just get comfortable with the camera.
Glad you enjoyed my shots.

Unbelievable!! It is truly amazing what the 20D/100-400L combo will do!! I need to start thinking about buying a flash now.
Seeing pictures like these, inspire me to keep practicing.:D Thanks for sharing, Dave!

Again, thanks for the kind comments to all!
Vertigo, you're right -- the 100-400L is one of the nicest, best performing, easiest to use lenses I've owned in over 35 years of photo work. You just can't go wrong with it! With the IS function it almost makes this lens fool proof. When you consider that all these shots were hand held, it just shows how a well made, well balanced lens can add to your enjoyment in the hobby.
Keep shooting!

These are great, amazing even. I wish I had more of these guys around my place, I could sit in the garden for a week and be lucky to see one.

Thanks for the encouraging words! I have a LOT to learn about digital cameras, and I mostly just shoot in auto and see what comes out. The results have been decent thus far. Thanks for the compliments on my pictures, I appreciate that. Yeah, your hummingbird shots were among the best I've seen, I can't believe the camera was handheld!!!
