Nah....if you burn $100 bills, you can put the ashes in an envelope and send them to the Treasury department for a replacement. I'm fairly sure Noink doesn't offer that same option.

This is really just wrong. It's your money and your stuff I suppose, but really a terrible waste of money if it was in fact a perfectly good camera and lens.

I watched about 2 minutes, it's unimaginative and dull. You have a blow torch and a camera, yay. At least use some kind of novelty home made explosives or something.

LOL.
Perhaps you could find a photographer/media professional to teach you resize images.
Or to teach you how to use a Nikon, or to teach you how to make a better video that refllects at least a milligram of class or talent.
Unless, of course, this thread is for nothing but "look at me, and see how I childish I can act, I need some attention, either positive or negative".
If that's the case, you did well.
Todd Lambert

Yea, no imagination whatsoever. I'd have ditched the video and just showed a shot of the final outcome along with a question like:
"I was going for lens flare, but maybe I pointed it at the sun for too long?"
or
"They had a smokin deal on slightly used Nikons at the store around the corner from my house"
or maybe
"Bought this in the Buy/Sell forums, do you think the seller lied about not being a smoker?"

Did anyone not think that, the camera let him down? I noticed the wedding photographer part at the top?
Maybe, he was shooting a wedding, and the camera crapped out on him, phoned Nikkon and they told him there was nothing he could do about it, and he could of lost alot of money?

Secrets First off, had a great time reading all the comments!. ... I'm glad you can't send punches through the forum. :-P
The idea of giving the camera to a school, student or Don7849 (a random user) would have been a great idea. (Someone at dpreview said I should fulfill the Kenya mail scam -- that was the best. http://a.img-dpreview.com/forums/inc/images/emoticon-smile.gif)
While some people think I was pretty crazy/stupid/immature to burn a d50, I found it informative and well... very fun. Most of us never see equipment destroyed, especially by a blow torch. I had a great time doing it (I am gearing up for your pyro comments.)
As for the camera shots, a non-camera person was shooting. i set up the camera for him, but i guess i forgot to tell him about the center spot focus and the minimum lens distance. and no, i won't be burning the 1ds anytime soon.
And lastly, while I 'proved' the camera was functional... it wasn't. Yes it did take pictures,.... but,.... only bright daytime subjects at M, 1/30 shutter, F4.? and ISO 1600. A set employee this last year decided that holding the camera was not what she desired, so she dropped it. I think at the time 6:10 or 6:20 into the video you can see a huge crack on the bottom of the camera... that was originally there. The lens was also broken from a different drop test - it only could take pictures on M (not A) on the lens. -- zoom was physically impossible.
As for the valuable parts, the battery and the cheap 512mb memory card, i of course saved those. waste not.
Now as for the comments about selling for parts. We did that last season. The camera sells for $15 to the camera rapair store then $5 for the lens. Shipping was on us and cost 5-10 bucks to ship. I would be able to eat a super-sized meal at mcdonalds with the profit (or 10 chicken crisps at burger king). We sold 12 broken d40, d50, d70 and d100 cameras last season. and about 20 x 18-55 lenses. (the kit lens broke quite easily believe it or not) We used the money we made to pay for part of one new D40 + lens. (crazy ratio)
Fixing the camera and lens would have cost more than a new D50 or D40 (if either were still made or sold) and the warranty was no longer valid. (not to mention they probably would not honor it).
lastly, while we did box it and ship it, we didn't ship back to nikon. instead we shipped to a friend as a gag. They should get it tomorrow.
Thank you all again for checking it out. I hope you can watch it again with a little more fun knowing its not really 'working'.
And remember, when I have a blow torch in my hands, you might want to keep your cameras away!

Thanks, but no...
I don't spend my time perusing the YouTube "hold my beer and watch this" type videos either.
Frankly, if I were you, I'd remove the video from your site and deny having anything to do with it in the first place.
It makes you look like an immature amateur to those not "in on the joke" , (which really isn't all that funny in the first place) and the General Public, which includes your future customers are amongst the folks not laughing with you.
If I were browsing/shopping for professional photographers for either personal or commercial interests, I'd discard you from the prospective choices based on that non-creative, silly video alone.
The internet is already full of trash "look at me" video, and with no offense intended, your production adds to the bottom of the "waste of bandwidth and time" video pile I don't care to seek, nor refer others to.

I think everyone needs to get over themselfs! So he burnt a DSLR? Why you all crying about it? Its was only for a bit of fun! It Was broken, why would you give a broken camera to an under privileged kid?
Like Mythbusters, they blow stuff up all the time for Fun, Entertainment etc...I watch it (mainly for the hot mythbuster girl ;))
How many of you have got a car that failed its MOT? Did you give that to an under privileged kid? I hope not!
Who Cares, anythings better than watching the news, i really enjoy seeing who got raped today, how much the stock market sucks, and how bad the weather will be this weekend! NOT!
Lighten Up, it was only a bit of fun!
I dont think anyone is allowed to have 'Fun' anymore! :(

Sorry Cosha, you're missing the intent of the video. Make it look like you're destroying a functioning Nikon camera, post it in Canon forums online... that to me is just really immature, trying to "fan the flames", literally, of stupid brand wars and fanboyism.
And no, I didn't give my worn-out car to someone, but neither did I set it on fire and post a video in a rivaling car forum...
Grow up people.

Wow this really pisses me of to be honest. I bust my butt to save up 1500 to pick up a 40d with lens only to have my grandma pass away and end up giving the money to my family to help with those cost. So now I wont be getting a camera for some time now. And this idiot has the nerve to destroy a perfectly good working camera. You could have given this thing to charity to some poor kid looking to start photography. What a waste

Next time you should try and get ahold of some liquid nitrogen and see if you can freeze and shatter a camera.

both are broken, hope that make you feel just a bit better. To me, it just give me that big WTF. even after you told me that was broken, it make me feel sick of what you do to a camera. I am previously a nikon user, don't see any fun in this video...

I don't get what the big deal is?
He took a broken body that was capable of taking pictures on the surface of the sun and hooked it to a busted lens and set it on fire.
This isn't like the video of the guy who went to a retail store, bought a PS3 and then smashed it in front of the line of people who didn't get one.
This was BROKEN CRAP. Nothing to see hear move along.
BTW, OP, you are an attention whore. ;)

Bingo.
The poster wanted people to think it was a working camera. He made a point of shooting shots before destroying it.
