Epson is 100 to 200 is pigment and piezo electric based. Canon is dye and thermal based. Using their respective pro paper will render quality print. Now the problem is the archival capability under control enviroment. I prefer the Epson since they at least offer some garantee, for whatever its worth.

While I would personally wait a few months, if you can, on the hope that Canon will release the new printer with the new longer lasting BCI-7 ink set in the states.

If you have to choose now it is truly a toss-up. Epson does have better longevity if using the good ink and paper, but Canon 9900 will produce a better out of the printer print and I think still faster then newer Epsons, but not as sure on this any more. Also cost of printing is overall cheaper with Canon in long run. Lastly there are very few reports of Canon clogging, but still read reports of Epson clogging.

I have the i9900 and love it so may have a slight bias in favor. Never had a problem with the printer although I have had problems with Canon Paper/Ink combinations. As mentioned in stick thread on i9900 at top of forum.

One thing I don't like about my Canon i560, recently bought the R1800, is that it's standard settings print were over saturated. I want what the image looks like, not something cranked up to look better but not accurate.

Pros Canon:

Faster
Quieter
Better Color output
More reliable

Pros Epson:

Archival quality
Better B&W output
Wider range of compatible consumables
More widely adopted (the industry standard)

Personally,. I've never owned and Epson that lasted a full year..
My two Canons I have owned are both well over that age and running strong. And they are soooo fast and quiet :)

I too have the i9900 and am very satisfied. I've always bought high grade name brand paper so I don't know the result of using cheaper paper. It's the only dedicated picture printer I have ever owned so I have nothing to compare it against but I know I am happy with it.

For what it's worth.
