Now that I've found out how to adjust the colors and remove that heavy magenta cast the pictures look muuuuch better. But I'm now having a problem with sharpness. All my IR photos have a grainy quality once they are blown up to 100%.Is there anything I can do to correct this or should I just save my money for a G1.

Thanks ???

Think about it, *if* the G3 has an IR filter in it, as Canon says it does, then the R-72 filter, that is supposed to only pass IR light will be limiting the amount of light the sensor sees. Of course, neither the filter in the camera, or the R-72 is perfect, and has a filter effect with a sloping tail, rather than a drop off, so both pass a certain amount the radiation they are supposed to filter. This is what the G3 sensor is detecting. The exposure times are very long compared to the G1, which suggests better IR filtering. But the image you get is like an ISO 800 image, as you are asking a lot of the sensor to detect any light to make an image. If you take a photo in daylight at ISO 800 with the G3 you'll get a lot of noise (grain).
I'm thinking the IR images are very soft and noisy because the Canon engineers really didn't want the G3 to be sensitive to IR.
Looking at my G1/G3 comparison, I'm thinking that the G3 might make really nice "soft focus" IR images. You'd have to re-think the old subjects, but maybe tree-lined streams and lakes, with little white gazeebos and a couple...just married... Oh, gee, I'm getting all teary-eyed. Just a thought.

thanks gandini,I guess if I want really sharp IR photos I'll have to get that G1.
