Picked up a glass rose from a street vender, thought it would made a wonderful prop for my 4-year old's pictures...Wrong! She seemed to enjoy playing with the rose rather than be IN the pictures.:( Between her moving in and out of the frames and making funny faces, I managed to squeeze few keepers out the 70 RAWs.

This one supposed to be the best (minus the bad in-camera crop). Then again, she looks like she's ready to join the military :o :D

All shots were taken with a 20D, 85mm 1.8, no flash.
Any tips on how to deal with a hyperactive 4 year old subject?

I think you did a great job -- these photos are beautiful! Maybe you've lost perspective while poring over all 70 shots, but that last one is a keeper!

These are all lovely photos of your daughter Lotto. I especially like the one at the upper right hand corner, the one were she puts the rose to her eye. That is just too cute.
You have a very beautiful daughter.

I think you did a great job. The top 2 pics look more natural. The last one is a little too tense. Anyway, She is such a cutie. Hope to see more from you. Thanks for sharing!

I love the expression in the closeup shot(#4?)-not so sure about the rose though. I also like #3, it's a silly kid picture. What ss and f/stop did you use? I'm having a heck of a time getting sharp pictures of my toddler whos always on the move too. I think that 85 1.8 is going to be my next lens...

Lotto,
these are wonderful pictures!
I like the vivid images better than posed 'stiff' kid-holding-the-glass-rose shots.
If you only get a few keepers out of 70 raw images, then take 140 the next time :D
Best regards,
Andy

Excellent pictures. I think you can "unstiff" the last picture by cropping just above her hand gripping the rose. Seems to soften it up a bit. Nice job on all of them.

My best tip is what you did... take tons of shots in order to get a handful of good ones. Your daughter is so pretty :)

Thank you all for your kind comments.
I too love natual poses and expressions, just hope my daughter would stop and hold steady for 5 seconds, so I could study the back ground and use the right F stops.
For my kids pictures, I shoot outdoor under shade as much as I can. I have this magic spot right in front of my garage, I could use the black garage door for low keys; turn to the side, I could use the light color back wall for high keys. The reflecting light from the cement floor is amazingly soft, provides nice catch light for eyes and the chin line. With that setting, I shoot a lot during high noon, and get the most vivid color.
All the shots are F2.8, 1/250 or faster, except the dark head shot, which is 1/80.
Well, I need to go 'spray' more:lol:
