Wikimedia - anyone use it?

From what I can read, Wikimedia is a web site that contributors posts images that are for the public domain. Is this another way for people to give their photos away for free along with all their rights to them? I don't really understand the purpose of the site. :oops:

Pretty much, the site is there for images/video/sound which is then public domain and thus usable on wikipedia.
