Can someone explain to me how these work. I know there is a notch on my Hoya CP that has to be aligned in relation to the sun. . . which direction?. . .thanks

Isn't it written in the instructions that came with it? If not I'll look up mine...

You rotate the filter until you get the effect you want in the viewfinder. If the subject is standing at 90 degrees to the sun, then the polariser will have most effect.

Generally, it's best not to overdo it.

I think the notch may to do with the way it is manufactured, rather than some aspect of it's operation.
