These are a couple pictures I took from a recent outing with a local actor looking to build his portfolio. Shot with Rebel XS, 50mm 1.8, and 430EX mounted on the hotshoe. Would greatly appreciate any input.

The first one looks soft and there's lack of eye contact and I don't like the tilt and all the space to the right in the second. It appears sharper than the first though.

The first one to me is lacking in lighting contrast. I think it would have looked nice if you had the 430ex gelled with a CTO to get some orange/yellow into the shot resembling the sun. The second shot on the other hand looks good in terms of lighting contrast as you see the suns effect that adds a good dimension to your shot.

Where did the third one go to? It looked like it had promise.

QMan - I see what you mean about both pics. I'm not sure why the first one is soft, was shot with 50mm @ f/8 1/50th sec. Perhaps a little slow? I can see how eye contact would have made the picture more impressive. Also, I too am not happy with the tilt and am apethetic about the additional space in pic 2.
Corser - I'm not sure I have an eye yet for lighting, but I can see the difference the sun makes between the two pics.
Flo - When I made the 3rd pic larger I realized how crappy it was. I was doing test shots at that point and didn't adjust my camera from the night before (newbie mistake), so it was at f/1.8 and ISO 1600. Soft and grainy, not how I wish it turned out.
