Hi, I am asking a stupid question but hopfully you guys will help me out. I have never seen a physical photographers portfolio. I would like to create my own but would love to see pictures of yours. I mean not just the photos but the physical set up of them and maybe some words of wisdom to go alone with the photos.
Would any of you be willing to show me yours? (yeah yeah, I'll show you mine once it is available ;) ) Thanks in advance.

I really think online portfolios are the way to go now. So much easier to update, globally accessable, cheaper int he long run.
Unless you are full time and making a good living off of it, a Website is the way to go.
If you are trying to exhibit in galleries or shows a phyiscal portfolio make be more useful. Tear sheets, brochures, poster examples are nice but can be allot of work to carry around.

I'm planning on getting one sometime soon. Prints are a little more impressive than a 600x400 picture on a screen a lot of times.

An online portfolio is easier and cheaper, but a physical portfolio comes in handy sometimes. It is unlikely that anybody wants to see all of my portfolio stuff, but it is possible that they want to see only one subject/theme. As a result, I have one portfolio of wildlife stuff only, another of wedding stuff only, and a third one of nature/scenery/wildflowers.

I use a carrying case similar to this one:
http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/servlet/OnlineShopping?Dsp=20300&PCR=30000:180000:182000:182600
Inside it are tear sheets, brochures and catalogs I have shot, and black window mats with large format transparencies. Tear sheets or photo prints are laminated to a black background. I usuall have 4-6 tearsheets or prints, several catalogs, and 3-4 transparency mats. I have begun scanning my non-digitally produced work in order to produce a CD which I can leave behind.

My wife has recently discovered scrapbooking as a hobby. After shopping with her a few times, I realized that a scrapbook (12" x 12") would make a good container for a casual portfolio. I've got about five pages done so far. Maybe I'll take a few pics of the results and post them sometime.

I can't remember if I've asked before, but what size should photos be in a portfolio?

Binders to hold sheets up to page size (8.5"x11" in the USA) are modestly priced. Unfortunately, when you figure in the matting, that leaves the photo itself around 6"x8" or so. Photo prints are cheap at that size, but they are not that impressive.
If you go up in size by one notch, that will be more impressive. Maybe 8"x10" prints with matting to bring the size up to 11"x14". But that makes for a much more expensive binder.

As you can see, there are several ways that you can do it. Here are a few more options. ;) The big prints are 16" X 20" mounted on black art board, which was also used for some of the transparencies.

online portfolio's?
Take a look at Jalbum. (http://jalbum.net/) It will generate thumbnails, build your webpages and link to either the original files or resized copies, then upload to the host server for you. Just point it to the directory where your files are located and choose an output directory. Very easy to use. And it's free. Lots of different page designs, too.
Try the "Vertical" skin with the Black.css "Style" for a clean album that doesn't get between your work & the viewer.
You can also order the images without worrying about the file names or dates. Press the edit button in the image ordering section. You will then see a text editor pop up with each image on its own row. Just rearrange the images and save, then generate an album again. Only downside is that you'll have to do that for each folder if you have a multi folder web.
Enjoy!

That was fast! Easy too, wasn't it?
FYI, it's working fine in Netscape 7.2. The pics are just a bit wide for my 19" monitor. I used the 80X60 thumbs with 750 wide horizontal images & max 500 for vert, but I size all mine in PS.
Good job!

I'm with Robert...I've got a couple portfolio's with mixed prints, from 4X6 up to 8X10. One of them has entirely wedding shots and the other is child, family & senior portraits. I almost always like to meet with potential clients in person, which means that I either have to meet somewhere with a wireless connection available and drag my notebook along, figure out the wireless connectivity and then locate my online portfolio. Its sometimes easier to carry in 2 medium sized portfolios and show them that digital prints can actually look as good as film. (That question still comes up all the time)..."Yeah, but do prints from digital cameras really look as good?" -yep, here are 100 prints for you to judge for yourself, is my response.

Easy? hah. not for me :P but everything complicates me the first time.
took me about 4 times to get it working, i thought i was a 'leet' coder, resizing after the gallery was made, editing the thumbs, etc etc. then uploading to find they didn't load. heh
but yes, it's an easy and clean looking gallery :D thanks a bunch

they are too wide for your 19 inch monitor? :o!!! i've got a 19" CRT monitor, and i use 1240 wide resolution. lol, how big do you have it?
PhotosGuy

1024 X 768. They're just a small bit too wide. I wouldn't worry about it, there are way too many combinations of res, browser, & monitors out there. Just thought you should know.
I almost always like to meet with potential clients in person, which means that I either have to meet somewhere with a wireless connection available and drag my notebook along, I agree about carrying the prints, but why not leave a copy of the web portfolio on your notebook hard drive? I also carry a couple copies on CD, just in case. JAlbum makes it very easy to make a 'custom' album in about 5 minutes.

I'm no expert, but for a printed portfolio I think Kolo has a nice, simple, classy look to it. The prices are decent. One thing I was wondering about is how to display both portrait and landscape images in the same book??? Is it okay to have people turning the book this way and that, or is that considered a faux pas?
