View Full Version : Shooting Hockey is difficult

Well, at least it is for me. I struggled with white balance, exposure, noise, high-ISO, shooting through the glass, dirty glass, missed focus points, and oh, yea it's kinda cold at ice level.

Anybody that shoots hockey well, I congratulate you! It's tough, dang tough.

I think I need a new camera, one that focuses faster, has better high-ISO performance and I need some more practice shooting hockey.

Welcome to the Club!

Membership requirements include lots of patience and one flask of your favourite hard liquor. Make sure the liquor never runs out because, if you're shooting ambient light hockey, your patience will!

Thanks, 1., 2., 3., and 8. were shot from the above position, but, yea the rest were shot through the glass (no port hole). It was very tough.

Yea, the Blues beat the Coyotes 5-2, but somehow the game didn't seem as UGLY as last nights game against the Canucks.

These look pretty good. Seems like you actually have a team down there this year.

Nothing vs. Vancouver is pretty ;)

I don't know if shooting hockey is difficult, but you make it look easy.

Really nice set. The only issue I have is with the watermark.

Thanks all for the kind words.

I'm struggling but having fun. I thought the quote from above was very funny.

I don't have time to post my next set yet, but soon. Should I add it to this thread, or make a new one?

See if you can find the puck in this shot (it's hard to see, but it's there).

You've got to make it tougher than that!!

I think there was a thread a few years ago with "find the puck" shots. I've had to zoom to 200% on some of my shots to find the thing.

Nice shots :) Looks like you had glass seats for the game and in the aisle for the other shots? I'm surprised (maybe) they allowed a camera (besides a point n' shoot) in there. The ushers made us take our camera back to the car as we were told "no cameras with changable lenses" allowed. All we had was a D. Rebel w/ the stock 17-55 lens and no other lenses with us. Despite our debate and the NHL website advises "no cameras with lenses longer than 6" are allowed". We weren't allowed to bring'em in. Then again, maybe it was because we weren't wearing PHX sweaters at the time? Who knows? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Only one porthole in the glass at the time, and I wasn't getting access to it.

It was my first time shooting a hockey game, so I thought such a fast-paced game would be easier to follow from concourse level (our only optional shooting position next to the TV cameras) and all the other shooters, including the person shooting for the newspaper has to shoot from up there.

I shot the first period from up there, but though my images looked a bit "snapshot-ish" so I moved down to ice-level to give that a try.

Come on now, that whole Dave/Hal thing was funny! . . . . or are you to young to get the whole Dave/Hal connection?

Sorry, If you are a Sci-Fi movie fan, watch the film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The director of that film and many others was Stanley Kubrick, I think it is good for a visual person (like a photographer) to explore all kinds of visuals even movies.

All the exif data says each was shot at 1/100 and F10 at 100 iso with flash fired...whats up with that?

The exif is getting hosed when I import the files into my psd boarder template, mostly ISO 1600, f2.8 or f3.2 SS 1/640 or better

I think I managed to get down to ISO 1000 with SS of 1/800 in a few spots in the arena, and about as far as I could go was f3.5

It's only cold at ice level because you're from the southwest!

Welcome to shooting hockey, I think you're doing well - as are the Yotes this season!

sorry bad spelling

Were you shooting at f10?
In other words what was your aperture set at, this is a pretty basic camera question.
My exif reader shows that you were shooting at f10, which is pretty pointless to shoot anything indoor sports wise at.

Rick, take a minute . . . pause, a nice sip of hot coffee, wipe some of the sleep from your eyes and read my response in post #23 and you will see I answered the question.

I didn't understand the question BECAUSE the exif data he was giving me was SO, SO far out of what I used, to me . . . the question didn't make sense.
