View Full Version : Flash attacked by a 10 month old

My son yanked my camera off my desk (yes I should have been more careful) and the flash hit first, breaking the foot:

Can anyone think of a fix? If I can't do it myself should I send it to Canon or bring it to a local store?

Thanks!

You can always buy that part from Canon.

I would maybe check out flash zebra? I may completely wrong but I swear I saw flash foot parts there.

IIRC, Flash Zebra's feet have sync ports in them as well...

It's $6 from Canon...

Just replace it. I yanked my camera out of my bag and my 580 went flying onto the parking lot blacktop. I almost cried as I heard the plastic shattering. Sent it to Canon, it was the red cover to the beam. Fixed with warranty in place, just paid for shipping. Nice people at Canon.

It's a break away design. Easy to fix if you're handy, no soldering needed, just held on by screws. Canon may send it for free...

I got this one for $200 second hand. Does the 430EX II have a stronger foot?

No... it's designed to break to prevent damaged to the rest of the flash or worse, the cam's hot shoe.

Replacement feet are available here:
http://www.uscamera.com/index.htm
or here:
http://www.bocaphoto.com/products/new/canon/canonacc.htm#parts
As well as on ebay if you don't want to order from Canon.

At least the 580 EX II has a stronger foot. It will break further up instead. But that takes more violence.

That is what I was about to say, too. I'd rather have the weakest, cheapest, and most replaceable part broken in accidents.

BY the way, what is the diff between the 430 EX and the 430EX II?

Buying new one would be waste of money imo, just fix the flash its not that expensive to replace the mount. (less then new flash)

The new part is on the way. I will let you know how it works out.

No way I would buy a new one. I am saving up for a Tamron 17-50.
