View Full Version : Pretty Sure I Don't Like It....

I don't think I like the composition at all, something about it just hits me wrong. I can't do much with cropping, just to the right and below the butterfly is really busy (lots of distracting branches...). As I feel the butterfly should be centered this is about all I can do. I do though love the way the sun came through.
So what do you all think? Is it ok? How could it be better? Thanks.

I like it as it is. The butterfly and flower are in the right place (to me anyway), and the unneeded foliage is appropriate blurred. I might be tempted to saturate a little more the 2 stripes of gold (where it looks like the wings overlap) and the bits of red on the butterfly wing.

I think it's great. I particularly like the contrast of colour between the butterfly and the background.

I like it. But its too bad about the leaf behind the butterfly. It kind of makes it uneven. But if you are skilled with PS then that's easy to repair.

I like it. Sometimes the rule of thirds doesn't rule. Even if you had more to leave in the image you would be farther away from the butterfly.

An idea would be cropping from the top to just below the stem of the flower (and having just the bottom third of the flower showing) and then cropping from the bottom halfway between the butterfly and the border. You'd end up with a nice quasi panorama format that might work well...Although it is nice as is!

I'm with Cobra that I'm not sure if I like it. The composition is great, the colors are great, the subject is great, but I find the spiky ball-flower thing (what IS that) distracting from the butterfly (which, btw, is BEAUTIFUL). Plus it looks like it might fall right off... perhaps if it were on top of the "ball" it would be better?
Not too sure what to say...

Thanks all, I really appreciate your comments and input. I think what I don't like about this is how low the butterfly is in the picture, it just hits me wrong. Before I do a print I'll have to play around and see if I can get it more centered. We'll see!

I'll have to play around and see if I can get it more centered. For me, that's the problem - too centered. I'd crop some off the left to make the pic a bit more dynamic.

Hmm.... Yet another option to think of, thanks!

I hope you dont' mind, but I did a crappy photoshop version of a possible angle of how I think it might look nice (if you can make it work). I didn't fuss with centering though, as I had to recreate the corners... but it gives you an idea anyway.

I like Spirit's take on cropping the pic. Very nice.

I hope you don't mind my take on this, but cjm mentioned the "leaf behind" the butterfly, so i removed it to see how it looked. I like both, just wanted to see if it would change the dynamic of the photograph. What do you think?

Thanks for the compliments on my crop, but I still think something is missing in the background on the upper and lower right corners.
I honestly don't know which one I like better. I don't think I prefer one over the other, it's just that they speak differently.

Hey Spirit, thanks for your input here. I really like your idea too (love that angle you did), but like you said the lower right is kind of lacking now. I printed out another picture of this butterfly already, maybe I'll just stick with that for now!
Thanks again all.

Learner: Of course I don't mind. But in your version, now the leaf on the lower left is bothering me.
What a shame though... for such a BEAUTIFUL picture, it's just not right! I hate what that happens. lol

Spirit, it's still a great picture, with or without the leaf. Imho:)
