Most of us have a lens in the back of our heads that we would love to own ,but either can't affort it of can't justify it.
Well forget all that guilt stuff and tell the world your dream lens:p

Mine would me the 100-400 L ,which won't be a dream for much longer I hope:D

Mine would be the 400mm f/2.8L IS.

If you're talking real lenses which actually exist I'm with you Simon on the 100-400L, I very much hope to be able to get hold of this lens around February time next year. Until then I will just have to dream... :)

condyk
7th of July 2005 (Thu), 14:50
Ideally the Sigma 300-800mm but it is way too big to carry around. I too would find the 100-400mm IS L the ideal option from what's available at the moment. Of course, if the Bigma or my 100-300mm f4 had IS then they would be fighting for top spot.

Nightcrawler

If you're speaking of lenses presently made, the 600 f/4L would be one.
There's quite a collection of realistic but non-existent lenses that I'd like to have. 200-400 f/4L, 18 mm f/2L.
If we're discussing impossible lenses, a 12-1200 f/1.4 IS lens would be nice, especially if it isn't huge. :)
I could write a book.

This first bit has to be read with a Homer Simpson accent.

The kit lens, oh, the kit lens. (kind of like pizza!).

It was a funny dream.

and then I woke up and found I had a bagful of Sigma's and Tamron's and ....

It was a nightmare.

and they turned out to be Canon's ...

It was morning.

Happy days.

600 F4 is something I have been very very close to get (there is thread somewhere here on POTN about it). I cannot really justify it, I will have very rare occasions to use it and albeit it was an excellent used one (no IS) it would have been quite an expense. I ended up dropping it and ordering the 100-400L (still to arrive). But it still stays there as something that who knows when I will get.

Good point.,. how much walking will make up the difference in feild of view between a 600mm f/4 with a 1.4X T-con (840mm @ f/5.6) and 1200mm @ f/5.6?

Mine would be the ever popular 15-1200 1.4/IS USM in kevlar

Hard to believe it is only 24 ounces.

Yeah, they seal them and fill them with helium to make them lighter. Quite clever really, then any lens with an 850mm (1200/1.4) aperture will have pleanty of capacity in it...

Hey, whaddayaknow, I never knew this existed. :D

I wonder if anyone has adapted one of those gems to EOS system and made a few shots of, say, the Moon, Brittney Spears and daffodils. Really, samples would be awesome.

Good Lord! That thing weighs more than I do. Maybe it could be bolted to the roof of the new GCPS X-Trail and used while standing up through the sun roof.:):):):):):):):):)

Any of the EF or EF-S macros will work on your XT. The new Canon 60mm macro looks pretty interesting, although I haven't seen any results from it yet. I think the Canon 100mm macro is one of the most highly regarded and will give you life-size images.

A 300 or 400 2.8 IS lens would do the trick for me. It's just a minor point of affording one or waking up.

Something like this?

I don't know what that top one is. It looks like it might be a twin 5" mount (not sure).
The bottom two look to be different views of a twin 40mm AA mount.

I served on a gun crew and fired the twin 40's back in the days of the Great White Fleet. For fun, they have paintballs beat six ways to Sunday (especially when someone else is paying for the ammo).

I am fortunate enough to already have the 300 f/2.8L IS and the 500 f/4.0L IS, so I guess the only lenses left for me to crave are the 400 f/2.8 or the 600 f/4. The 1200 f/4 is simply out of the realm of reality for a relative pauper like me.

The funny thing is, I really don't want anything beyond what I already have.

I guess it's time for me to get into collecting Jim Beam decanters.

Right now? Anything "L" because I am tired of having to buy lens hoods for my canon lenses. Thank you SIGMA for sending them with the lens.

If we are being resonable then how about a 50-150f/2.8 to follow the new 17-55, and a 150-500 f/4 maybe.

CyberDyneSystems

You might want to clarify..

Is this a lens that could actually be made?

Does it defy the laws of physics and gravity?

Or will a 600mm f/2 dream lens be as large and heavy as it really would be if some nutjob actually made one?

This will have a HUGE effect on the answers of those who actually read your criteria anywya..

Close.

EF-S 16-1600 f/1.8 IS USM L

EF-S of course to keep the cost and size down, and because then I would never have to get rid of my 20D.

Shouldn't be much larger than a pickup truck or cost more than a dozen 1200mm primes.

EDIT: I just realized, it would probably need to be a (hydraulic) pump zoom. :(
