View Full Version : My 50mm 1.8 fell apart!

I was trying to determine if a speck in my viewfinder was on my focus screen or my lens, so I changed lenses to the 50 and the thing refused to focus. I tried to manual focus and saw then that the end of the lens, the portion that moves when it focusses, was cockeyed, one side sticking further out than the other. I tried to adjust the len, hoping it would get back into alignment, and the whole lens element popped out in my hands!
Only a $100 lens, but still a pretty annoying development...

Sorry to hear about your misfortune but this is exactly the reason I switched to the 50F1.4.......cheap quality will not inspire one to use a lens like this.......I know the optics may be good but the build is very bad. Feels like a toy.

I love mine.. and yes, you do have to baby it... But for the price, its worth it... Next time.. just by 2 just incaise. For the price, you can afford to use it to level ur tripod on a uneven surface.

Just bought one today, hope mine holds out better. The first shots look great, but it sure has a real cheap fell to it.

Hmmm. If I break/scratch/drop my 50mm 1.8,I'll buy another one. I would be much more unhappy if I did that with the 1.4. I think you can buy like 5 1.8s for the price of the 1.4. There are lots of reasons to buy the 1.4 over the 1.8 like the extra 2/3 of a stop, better bokah, range display, USM, etc... BUT that should not discourage anyone from buying the 1.8 until they can afford or need what the 1.4 has. The 1.8 is sturdier than one might expect, RikWriters lens not withstanding.

The grand kids were at the house this past weekend. The youngest was "helping" me, and got into my camera gear. He dropped my 50mm 1.4 onto the floor. We both said oops, and all was fine after shooing him away from my gear. Oh, the lens is fine.

Another classic example of false economy.
