I have to admit, with shots of my own kids, I'm not a very good judge of how compelling a photo is.

The expression I've got here - in your mind - dynamic/engaging or flat?

There is a certain amount of attraction to that area that is in sharp focus, of course. In this case, it works toward the main objective, which is to have the boy's face get all of the attention.

Unfortunately, that is about all that there is here - not much interest. About the only other thing suggested by the image is that it might be breakfast time.

The eye contact, their location fairly low in the frame, gentleness, the angle - all guaranteed to bring out whatever protective / caring / parental feelings a viewer might instinctively have. It's nicely sharp. But, the background clutter is a bit distracting and lop-sided, the bowl attracts attention and takes it out of frame, and his face needs a bit more light....

Cheers,
Tony

Nice catch on the expression. Cute kid. I think it would work better as a vertical composition. That would allow you also to put back the top of his head.

Definitely would jump out more with a clear background. I think his face needs a bit more light as well. But the expression (which is what you really asked critique for!) is excellent, despite the fact that he looks like he's eating something ;) In which case, the visible kitchen backdrop works! He's a cutie :)
