Hello!
I've had my 300D for just under a month and I'm loving it.
it has come time to put together my wish list:
580EX Flash
2 GB CF Extreme III
Grip (Christmas)
1ds Mark II (I wish)
What do you think of this list?

I think that the Extreme III is a little too much for the 300D.

Exreme III is overkill, the camera can't write that fast. Ultra is all u need.

Get as fast as you can afford. Do not worry if the camera makes use of it or not. If you upgrade you will be glad you did purchase the faster card.

Grip is superb. I would get 2 x fast-ish cards like the unltra II for redundancy reasons. If you have only one large card and it goes wrong you're scuppered! The faster cards will only get much cheaper over time so buy them when you need them and then use the older ones for spares.
As to flash, did you check out the Sigma 500 Super as it seems to lose little over the very expensive Canon offerings and at around half the price? I am considering this at the moment but don't yet know enough about flash to make a choice. I'm an outdoor wildlife shooter mainly, so flash is a new world!
I'd also add the Canon hand strap. Transforms carry around handling even with a big lens. I hate neck straps.

I think I've used an Ultra III either in the XT and the 20D. I use Ultra II, personally, but that was a borrowed one, don't remember why, probably I just ran out of space :)

I have not heard of an Ultra III - is this new?
The 300D will not take full advantage of the speed of either the Ultra II or the Extreme III, but they will work. As someone pointed out, you may want to get it now so you have them when you upgrade.
Someone else mentioned that there will probably be bigger, faster cards when you do upgrade. But if you buy the basic card now, when you try to use it with the upgraded camera you will immediately be shopping for the latest and greatest, as the basic card will take forever to write images. Ultra II is not a bad compromise, as it is not much slower than the Extreme III - but go for what you can afford.
One small advantage to the Extreme series is that Sandisk gives you image recovery software for the CF card. This type of software is available from several sources (some for free), but it is included with the Extreme. Beware, though, of Lexar's version of the recovery software. I'm told that it only works with Lexar cards. The Sandisk should work with any CF card.

The 580EX has to be good. I have both a 550EX and a 420EX. If you plan to someday use multi-flash units then by all means stay with the Canon flashes. Yes, I was tempted by the lower cost Sigma, but once I held a Sigma in one hand and a Canon in the other the quality of materials, fit and finish were appearent. Also, there has been reports of Sigma being fickle when used in multi-flash setups. If you would like to save a few $$$ look for a discounted price on remaining 550EX stock or check eBay. BTW, both my units (as well as my 220EX) are "International" models thus saving me some money without loss of quality.:)

Grip is something I will get - so that includes a spare battery.
thanks for telling me all I need is a Ultra - :)
No glass? I think I've got enough - although a macro may work it's way in somewhere :D
