Where to shoot?!

Any suggestions for outdoor shoots? Parks? woods? where could someone without an empty room and yard to speak for do a portrait shoot?
Indoor or outdoor, preferably outdoor though

A variety would be nice. All sound like good places. Pick it based on what you know from your subject, their personality. Let us know how it went!

You should be able to find some cool outdoor locations at local parks, another option is to just go out around town....early Sunday mornings are great to get out around town because most businesses are closed and traffic is at a minimum. If you're in good with a church or warehouse owner, they may allow you to use some space to set up a backdrop for some inside work in their off hours. Also check out rec centers. That's all I can think of off the top of my head :)

After I posted this thread I thought of my church, which has a good bit of land as well as lots of woods (most of it being un-passable) so basically a lot of tree line surrounding 3 sides of our property.
I think it may be awkward in some ways saying "hey *insert priest/pastors name here* can I bring a model around while no-one is here and take pictures?!" Then again it may be just because I am starting and am nervous about pretty much *everything*

Are there any cool spots in your downtown area? Even alleys can make a great backdrop for photography.

hahaha in hendersonville NC there is not much on main street and if you do something like that on main street i have no doubt you would be asked to leave... buch of uptight crotchety people

After a quick search, you've got the Blue Ridge Mountains at your feet. Also, with a historic downtown, that should lend itself to great photographic opportunities.

like I said before the downtown is off limits, I rather not start a problem.... at least not while I am a small time photographer.
I am hoping to do some stuff out in the mountains. I don't think it will be hard to do

I like shooting at the park especially on weekends.

Looking glass falls is pretty nice but crowded, and no room to set anything up. There's a few spots by the river on 64 on the way to Chimney Rock where you might be able to pull something off.

There's a few nice places around here out of the way, but you never know if a truckload of rowdy rednecks will show up, and a random model might find it a little strange going somewhere like Deep Gap or World's Edge for a shoot. Our local parks kind of suck, there's some nice places on the parkway, when it's not closed for rockslides or weather.
I only take pics of the family for fun, so no need for dragging around a bunch of equipment. Slowly learning as I go, good practice just getting out and shooting different stuff.

I had this same problem a few years back when I did portraitures. I agree with your sentiments of downtown HVL. I used Jackson Park a time or two on the trails, but they offer very little as bulldogg7 said. The Parkway is an option, however if you cross over the parkway and go down 276 or 215 there are some nice pull-offs as well.

I know I can use a place up above canton on 215 (i think it's 215) and devils courthouse just looks nice up there LOL
but that's 1 1/2 hours trip, quite a while for a model to go IMHO

just watch going onto private property. If you think you might be on private property, probably moving on is a good idea.
