I was torn between which to get, and in the end went for the cheaper of the two. However I am curious to know how much better the s45 is than the s40. I mean, at the end of the day, why is it $200 nire expensive, when it has the same number of megapixels, and similar features?

I got S45 and i must say it is brilliant. Couple of new feature in S45 makes it superior than S40. Esp. with ISAPPs, the autofocus works great in difficult condition.
I too was confused like you were initially between
S30 & S45 as there was lot of difference in their costs. If you are not keen on Compact camera to fit in you pocket, i would go for G3... has 4x zoom, hot shoes and a wireless remote to play on the TV or to take pic.

Well, for me s45 have a far better menu placement by using FUNC button to change ISO, exposure, bracketing, etc. I will choose s45 based on this advantage alone (s45 was not out yet at the time I bought my S30).
But then considering other factors, s45 wins s40 only at these point:
- More manual control for flash setting
- Better menu layout
- iSAPS and DIGIC processor (faster operation but not much compared to s30)
but over these there are little improvement:
- Still the same focus performance as compared to s30 (tried my friend's s45)
- Same feature but different menu layout (except an extra flash setting)
- Strangely dull LCD colour compared to s30 (probably put the setting to neutral as opposed to vivid setting on my s30)
So I'd say you go for either s30 or s45 or g3. Don't consider going for s40. For advantages of s30 over s40 you search it at this webpage. Happy hunting.

NB: s50 already being mentioned at PMA2003. If you wait for s50 to come out, you can buy s3x or s4x at cheaper prices.
