Can I walk into a facility (youth indoor soccer arena), pass out business cards, ask for parent permission, and take pictures (for profit)? I know it is best to ask the owner first, but in many cases the only people there are hourly workers.
What if it was an outdoor public area (fields) where YMCA type games are played?

I would not do this without contacting the proper people and gaining permission first.

I would think you need persmission from te people who own the venue or at the very least the organisers. The law is obviously different in different countries but I think this general principle will keep you safe.

Is there some reason you are unable to do the appropriate legwork prior to the event? I can't think of one reason why this would be a good idea. But there's at least a dozen why it's a bad idea.
I certainly would not do it.

whats the logic behind not requesting permission? I would think you would need too. There may be requirements you are not aware of as well.

Just in case it wasn't planned. For example going shopping with the marathon shopper (wife) and I get bored... I could look for someplace to go....

well, if the parent(s) wanted to buy I wouldn't say no... otherwise it would be just good practice

There may already be an "official" photographer on site that the parents hired and you would just be asked to leave. People these days are cautious about uninvited strangers taking pictures of their kids.

I agree with that as I would be with my own children, that's why I indicated that I would speak with the parents first....

How are you going to speak with the parents first? Will you ask every parent in the facility? If you're taking a picture of a kid in a game, how will you identify his/her parents in the stands? I know from my days as an ice skating parent, I would not appreciate some random person with a big camera coming up to me in the stands and asking if he can take a picture of my kid, and will I buy it? And if the event has an official photog, he won't be too happy. I have to agree with the other posters that this is not a good idea.
